Blown hx35?

Took the hotside off my holset today and when i got it off i noticed the piece behind the turbine wheel is loose. It also looks like the blades imprinted on it. I never ran the turbo i just bought it last month. Heres pics.

Looks fine to me, but you should probably have it rebuilt before using it if you don't know where it came from. Who knows if it was once installed on an engine that blew while the turbo was installed and will soon fail catastrophically.

The guy said it has 80k original miles, and his truck only has 90k. Is it normal for that piece to be loose and when you spin the wheel out of the housing have it make a metal to metal noise?

Yeah that's normal if your talking about the hotside turbine housing seal plate. It's the big cup shaped piece. Either way I just recently got a Farb hx40pro that was said to be a good low mileage core. Checked all of the play specs and it was out. Upon tear down the bearings were out of spec as well as the thrust washer was scorched. Turbine wheel needed a polish and $100 genuine holset kit later it is pristine.

Long story short, just get the rebuild. It may save you extra time and headaches.

Take this more as what you need to do more then advise. Justin is one of the best resources this site has left, he even can rebuild them. If you don't know the history of the turbo why risk it? Also the time you spend installing it only to remove it soon after.

I wouldn't describe the rebuild process as "cake"; if it doesn't take you a good 3 hours then you didn't clean everything as good as it should be.

Best place to buy the parts is from a Cummins Power dealer.

I've seen much worse still in operation; it would work fine if you're planning to use the factory twin-scroll housing.
