what year cummins came stock with hx40

hey guys.. i am looking at buying a Holset off of my budy.. he has a 99 cummins (M/T) that he took off the truck. He bought an hx35, now the one he took off is physically larger than the 35 that he just got.. My question is what years of cummins came with the hx40, if they even did. there really isnt any part numbers or eveb the holset tage on it, theres a spot for it but not there..

No Dodge trucks ever came from the factory with a HX40 installed. The turbos used were the H1C, HX35, HY35, HE341, and HE351.

Then it's possible he's trying to install a HY35 instead of a HX35.

All HX35's and HX40's use a nearly identical compressor cover dimension. The HY35, HE341, and HE351 all have a smaller cover overall despite their respective compressor wheel sizes.

I can't offer any more advice without pics, unfortunately.

Various Cummins ISC engines with larger displacement. The HX40 was seen to be too laggy for standard use on the 5.9; the additonal airflow benefit never offset the lag, meaning you could never rev the engine far enough during standard operation to take advantage of the additional airflow the HX40 would generate.

Diesel engines have only 1/2 or less of the usable RPM range that our cars do, and often if you get a turbo that doesn't spool quick enough to pull a diesel engine into it's usable torque range you'll only hurt the engine's power curve in the end. Our cars rev so fast and so easy that you often forget that a couple hundred RPMs of lag could murder a diesel's ability to produce power, especially while pulling a mountain or hauling something heavy like they are designed to do. If you can't grab that next gear and have the turbo recover quickly, you're done.

turbine side- 12 blade

That's a HY35.

Same compressor as the 7-blade HX35, but it has a smaller turbine wheel as well as a smaller undivided T3 9cm turbine housing. Originally used on the Dodge trucks with auto transmissions in the 99-02 era.
