I was searching the local classifieds in my area and spotted a .50 trim garrett turbo for sale. The price was right, so I inquired to the seller for some pictures. I'm having some difficulty figuring out if it's authentic or not... I've seen so many knock off turbo's on the internet lately and I have limited experience with Garrett, so I'm not sure if this is an authentic Garrett 50 trim. Help?

I notice in the pics that the turbine wheel is wet (which I"m assuming means a blown seal) and there are some nicks out of the inducer wheel (I don't know if that means anything). A rebuild would not intimidate me as long as the turbo was rebuildable.

Anyway, here are the pics he sent me:

.50 is not a trim, it's the area/radius of a certain compressor cover. The T04E covers come in .50, .60, and .70 a/r ratios.

That looks to me like either a 54 or 57 trim compressor mated to a T31 turbine. Quite common. Only a measurement will confirm actual compressor spec.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with that compressor wheel aside from a few nicks from normal use. You'd shit your pants if you'd see the wheel damage on some of the turbos I get in at the shop which customers want repaired because they're too cheap to buy a new wheel. If you rebuild the turbo, send the parts to be balanced and it will give you years of trouble-free service.

What would I measure to get an accurate spec to determine trim?
Is balancing the parts necessary during the rebuild? I thought all components were factory balanced?
How much work is it going to be to enable the use of this turbo on my 1g? Is it worth it? I'm currently running a b16g with all supporting mods.

The inducer and exducer of the compressor wheel.

On hybrids, component balancing depends on the builder. With the shape your compressor wheel's in, don't half-ass this by copping out of a $45 balance job.

Lots.

You'll need a different manifold, an external wastegate, different o2 housing, all the oil lines, and you'll need lots of patience because Garrett journal bearing turbos are known for picky oiling on our cars. Too much, they die....too little, they die.

Unless you're running 25psi on your Big 16G, you're not going to notice any gains. In fact, your car will feel slower at low boost because less airflow will be moved than your 16G and it will take more engine RPM's to make the turbo spool.

Awesome. Thanks for the excellent info. I will definitely not cheap out on the balancing. I'm running 20psi on the 16g, btw. :)
