fp18g problem pic inside

Well i had this 18g on my car for a couple months, no more than 2500mi, but within the first 1000mi i noticed shaft play in the thrust and side to side. The shaftplay never got any worse but i knew it wasnt right. So i ended up buying an hx40 and taking the 18g off and when i started probing around i noticed the turbine wheel was cracked and chipped, but not on the blades on the backside. I keep my car in the safe range with 11.0-11.3 air fuel and never ran more than 18lbs of boost simply because the turbo wouldnt make any more than that on my 2.3. Anyone else have this problem with the new 18gs

Cracking around the rear of the turbine wheel is from heat and is normally only a problem when the turbo has been run a while with considerable in/out play. This allows the wheel to rub the heat shield, wearing both parts as thin as paper.

Once this has happened, it's pretty safe to say the turbo is junk. The factory balance is completely thrown off, and by the time you replace both wheels and all the internals you're better off buying a new CHRA or a completely different turbo.

yea its the td06l2 or whatever its called, basterd did they warranty it? I have a holset hx40 that im taking my time to set up right, jusmx what do u think of this drain for the holset? its 3/4 copper with two 45 degree fittings instead of the one 90 degree turn, also i drilled my 10an fittings and the hole in the pan out to 11/16ths.

no they didnt, they cut me a deal on another one for 699......wtf. another local guys failed also but they charged him 250 because of a 70 dollor filter. although his failed for the same reason mine did....because he had there filter they some what warranted his. o well.....borg w. turbos for now on.

Funny, I was going to tell you that I heard some peoples' 6sl2 18g's failed quickly (with an oil filter) here in DFW, but the person I was referring to was Bastard DSM's.

I just got my turbo rebuilt by fp for free. Told them what happen. I sent it to them with my paper work. Week later was rebuilt at my door. I told them listen, it had little shaft play and two days later it blew up. They were nice and helped me a lot. They said the covered it because it was under warrenty (1 year). Also yes it was a 18g slp2

I bought the second turbo in the first batch from FP. and it was on my car for 1.5 years and has been on my roommates car for 8 months. Ran the turbo as high as 26psi. I had no issues with the turbo while it was on my car.

I ran pump gas and race gas through the turbo for the 1.5 years I had it and 1.5 race seasons on it. car made 370 whp at 24psi on a very safe tune when i first installed the turbo. By the time I took it off my car I was right around 400whp.

Well I called force performance up and brought it to there attention. They didnt know anything about. Hope they will come on the forums and straightening everything out. They are great bunch of guys to deal with. If you ever had a question they would help you out. So far the turbo is perfect after the rebuild at 300 miles atm. Had big cruise to the shore and back and didnt skip a beat. Ill let everyone know if anything happens. Keep your fingures cross

From what I can tell, and have read, the people that have had this turbo blow, usually are running really high boost..? But, that should not make the turbo blow unless it has been happening for a while..

Robert from fp called me today and we spoke, cool guy we bumped heads a little but at the end of the conversation he told me to send it back and he would be happy to rebuild it

I've had my 18G6SL2 for a little over a year and it has about 6000 miles, it has seen 30-32 psi of boost, but normally tapers to about 25 by redline. I really beat the ever-living-hell out of my car every time I drive it. It has about 50 track passes and about 100 3rd gear pulls.

I actually just checked it today while doing a BLT and it still has the same minimal side to side shaft play as when it was new, no in/out, and the compressor wheel looks perfect. Its oiled from the OFH w/-4an, no BS, ported relief valve, 10-40 oil, stockish sized oil return, and always turbo timed.

I will be swapping my exh mani this weekend and I will report back if anything looks weird. I just swapped O2 housings a few weeks ago, and that side of the turbine blades looked great, no oil, no blade damage, no metal shavings.
