The "funnel" that attaches to the smic?

Hey all,

I was wondering if the black "funnel" that attaches to the SMIC is a necessary item? When I upgraded the stocker to the Dejon SMIC on my '97 TSi AWD, I did not bother reattaching it. However, I just read in another thread someone say to be sure and reattach the funnel with the new SMIC. This leads me to wonder if performance is being hurt by not having it on there?

In short, should I reattach it or does it make any difference whatsoever? I tried to search but didn't find anything else on this.

Thank you very much!

Edward,

The stock funnel will not fit on the DejonTool SMIC, but it would be best to have something channel the air to the intercooler core instead of allowing air to escape around it. You can either fab something on your own or have one made from sheet metal if you know of a good fabricator. This is something I'm considering since I've seen lower knock counts from running tests with a carboard type intake funnel. While it's worth only 1-2 counts of knock reduction, it's still something to consider. DejonTool used to sell these, but they don't make them anymore.

Hope that helps,

Andy

I would say it would be worth fabbing something something up. When I had an HRC smic I didn't run one & that could be why I wasn't that happy with the performance. Air likes to travel in the path with the least resistance. With no funnel installed, there is alot of other paths that the air will want to take instead of through the ic core, where you want it. If you are going to be running that for awhile & are looking for the best performance out of it, Id say to defently fab something up.

Thanks for the replies guys. I'll look into fabbing up a funnel to install. :thumb:
