It purges the contents of the evaporative purge canister into the intake manifold. The evap purge canister holds the gasoline vapors from the fuel tank until the engine meets certain conditions and then the solenoid releases them for the engine to burn. It prevents gasoline vapors from contaminating the atmosphere.
