14b to 16g conversion

What all is needed to change a 14b to a 16g.
>16g compressor/turbine wheel
>7cm turbine housing

Anything else needed. I'm not too sure about differences in seals or bearings or anything like that.
 
a 16g turbo is a direct bolt on replacement for a 14b. to get the most out of the larger turbo i would suggest purchasing a 190 lph fuel pump and 550cc injectors.an safc would help also. i got the same set up on my 1 g.
 
Well i suppose i should have been more specific. I have a 14b center cartridge with little shaft play. I figured i would rebuild it before i put it on just to be safe, and i also figured if it was easy enough i would swap in a 16g compressor wheel while i was rebuilding it.

he wants to turn a 14b into a 16g. IMO its not worth it. After you factor in the rebuild kit, wheels, balancing and the fact that the exhaust housing is probably cracked you could have just got a 16g
 
That's going to be your best bet. I picked up a used Big 16g ported and clipped for $300.00 with no shaftplay. Just search dsmtrader or the classifieds and you will find some that are going for pretty cheap.
 
You need:
16g rebuild kit (not 14b, they're different)
16g compressor wheel
16g compressor housing
7cm turbine housing

Rebuild kit is $100, brand new wheel is $100, I'm selling my compressor housing for $40 ($100 new), and I just sold my turbine housing for $50 (a lot new). On the bright side, if you do go through with the transformation, you'll know it's been freshly rebuilt unlike some that are "rebuilt" by someone else.
 
i thought the 16g compressor housing was the same.. they are both TD05H, but seeing as the compressor wheels are different i could see the inside of the housing being opened up a little.

No, the compressor housings are slightly different. The 16G has has a raised area on the back of the wheel. Because of this the compressor cover is slightly different. (A 14b cover on a 16g wheel, the blades would hit the cover)

As far as I knew, you just needed the 16g wheel and comp. cover to do the conversion.

What is the difference in the rebuild kits? Why couldn't he re-use the 14b's turbine housing?

Becaue most of them are cracked or are going to crack.

Why convert it to a 16g only to use a cracked exhaust housing or have it crack shortly and then have to pull it off all over again.

Yeah, thats what I was thinking. I just wanted to make sure it was possible. I've owned a few different 14b's and I've never had a cracked turbine housing. I'm sure many people have before, but if the thread starter is attempting a cheap rebuild/conversion, I wouldn't recommend replacing what isn't defective.

Well the thing is, i already have the center cartridge and turbine housing, and i can get a 16g compressor and housing fairly inexpensively. I think I'll give it a go and see how it works.

Yes, you could use the 14b turbine housing. It may be cracked and may work, but the 14b 6cm housing just sucks. You'll get quick spool, but your top end will blow. Definately go 7cm (16g) turbine housing. You need the 16G rebuild kit because the compressor wheel is "superback" which as you can see in the picture of the two wheels, the 16G wheel is convex in the side opposite of the fins, where the 14b is flat. Like I said, I have the compressor housing from a Big16G for sale if anyone would like to do the conversion.

I know the wheels are different, but how does that affect the rebuild kit? The 14b and 16g share the same CHRA, which means the same seals, o-rings, and bearings. What exactly is different about the kits themselves?
