So...
Finally did some test fitting after a long hard day. (easy to mechanics tough for newbies)

Exhaust manifold studs, double nut the little *&^% !ers and they come out.
Replace with Stainless Steel ones. Easy.
EVO manifold goes on, replacing the 1g stocker. Right hand edge by motor mount
needs to be ground off a little bit so it clears the bracket like so:
(also remove or lower Power Steering Pump, I got rid of mine )

Turbo bolts to manifold, test fit....

No denting the water pipe! They weren't kidding!!!!!

Was worried about the oil drain line after that... threads of the lines being
too short was disturbing, so I checked it out..
Indeed it FITS! it's... very bent, near kinked.. shouldn't be a problem ( I hope WTF )
(could someone confirm whether or not this is the "new" drain kit or the old one?)

And finally, the reason for "clocking" the turbo (I hope I said that right)

Uhh.. yeah.. just a LITTLE too close. LOL! :tease:

I wish I didn't have to mess with that part, I don't want any extra chance
of screwing something up!

Ok.. I did read some install threads and I'd like to know about 2 things that were confusing...

1.) what EXACTLY to use to plug the coolant line. I took the specs that were used in another install thread... asked the guys at Shucks, I even said "NPT" out loud.
They looked at me like WTF right.. so... anyway, ideas? Thoughts?

2.) The oil feed line.. someone said grab it from a hole by the oil filter to get
filtered oil, per David at Bullseye? I'm pretty sure I need to hook it up to the head?
Someone clarify with a picture or something as I'm totally confused by that. Again..
it doesn't take much to confuse someone like me.

With that said.. if I can install something like this with the help from VFAQ,
and these boards.. YOU CAN TOO. Just.. try not to blow it up when you're done
unless you got the super waranty.

1. npt fittings are the brass fittings you find at home depot etc. (Are they equivalent to "pipe fittings"? someone will have to confirm, I'm not a plumbing expert :) I used a 3/4" plug from home depot.

Now, I haven't been able to confirm this, but it looks to me like the plug from the oil filter housing is the same type. Take it out and try it. Again, it's the top-front plug you want to take out.

2. The reason for taking the oil feed from the filter housing is that you get clean, high pressure oil from there, as opposed to the head. I was under the impression that oil cooled turbos need higher oil pressure than water cooled ones.

The second reason is that if you have the bullseye oil feed line, then the fitting fits the filter housing hole, not the head.

Be careful with clocking the turbo too far forward, you're gonna have to make sure you leave enough clearance for the rad fan.

Good luck!

Question for you: does the evo3 mani match the bullseye gasket well? IE is it a 2.5" outlet or can you port it out that much?

I found the hole for the oil fitting (finally) :thumb:

The water pipe is going to get a weld job, I tried the brass fitting
and didn't like it. We'll see how she turns out this afternoon.

I'm going to get an aftermarker radiator and the slim fans. (mostly for looks bling bling)
I hope it provides enough clearance.

The metal EVO gasket that I ordered for the manifold was bigger at first because there's a "step"inside the manifold, so I hogged that out something fierce. Then I got the turbo
and the gasket that came with IT was slightly bigger, not much at all. Even though
it was so little of a difference, I still matched them up. Porting out the new cast mani wasn't bad at all.

Ported EVO mani from SBR or something would probably be a perfect match.

I also had no luck using the brass fitting from the oil filter housing to plug the water pipe.

It'll thread, but they seem to be slightly different sizes. The plug seems to be a tad too big.

Yupp it's definitely not a perfect fit as I said, it only threads in far enough for a ghetto seal. Mine doesn't leak at all.

I think the real thread is M16x1.5. If you can find a bolt like that, you can try using that. All I could find was 16x2 everywhere.

I haven't had such good luck plugging the rubber water line with the oil banjo bolt I took out of the head. It leaked a couple of times, last night it finally blew out completely on the highway at wot, and I gave the people behind me a pleasant smoke screen of vaporized antifreeze :) All my coolant blew out within seconds. If you're gonna try to ghetto plug the water feed hose, make sure you zip-tie it really hard. The stock clamp doesn't clamp down hard enough. A proper barbed fitting would be much nicer but I couldn't find one yet. Has anyone found a good solution for this?

I would think a good way to fix that would be to use a section of fuel injection line and a fuel line clamp. They're built to hold 100PSI, so coolant pressure shouldn't be a problem (unless you have a blown HG....)

It looks like the oil return line you got there is the new design. Based on the picture on the website, I initially thought that I had the old design...so I asked them to ship me a new one and I would send back the old...but I got the exact same kind the second time. OMG

As it turns out...they have an extension fitting...that looks like it comes off on an angle. Instead of waiting to have the fitting shipped to me...I bought a long enough section of -10 AN braid hose and just used the fittings.
