I just recently bought a bone stock 98 gsx...I don't know the DSM cars all that well but I have wrenching experience and 3000gt/Stealth TT experience. It turns out that the turbo is completely toasted on the car (no boost, major exhaust issues as it just smokes oil majorly out the back). The car is an automatic (if that matters)...in any case, I had planned on eventually building the car up a little (nothing major as it is my daily driver) so I dont have the funds to start with the fuel supply and spark and yadee yadee yadda as I just bought the car....I was hoping someone would have a good idea of what type of turbo (be as specific as you like) I should purchase and where i should get it from. I don't want to throw on a giant turbo because i dont have any other mods done yet, but I would hate to toss on a stock turbo and spend the money on a bone stock turbo just to go 6 months down the line and have to replace it because I wanted to build it up...so is there a turbo out there that can make more power eventually but would opperate in a stock environment effectively as well? Something that I can make use of a few months down the road but wont kill the motor in a stock setting? Thanks for any help and suggestions!

Nate

I would suggest getting a smaller turbo just like you are thinking. Either a T-25 or a 14b can be found rather cheaply on the classified section. If you are looking for something that has the ability to make some deacent power than a T-28 might be in order, but they are much more expensive than the formerly mentioned ones and I am not sure if you are interested in putting a expensive turbo on you car.

Anyone elaborate on advantages/disadvantages of t25 versus 14b versus s16g? I am really new but I definately want to be educated and am willing to listen and learn...thanks for any help!

I don't necessarily know that that's the way i want to go because the car is bone stock at this point...no upgraded fuel pump no nothing...but how cheap is cheap?

Well 14b can be found cheap and they do flow a bit better then the gimpy T25's and you will be able to get away with stock fuel system. The downside is you will need a J-pipe and some oil/coolent lines made up or purchased from a DSM vender to make the 14b fit.

Here is my personal experiences with buying used/ low performance turbos.

The first time my turbo blew out my car was completely stock and I purchased a used T-25 from someone off of the classifieds section for $100. He took forever to ship it and the turbo blew out after two weeks( It was probably my fault though). After that I found a local person that had a used T-25 laying around and I picked that baby up for $30 and slapped it on. It worked for several months and allowed my to upgrade my fuel, exhaust, etc. before I swapped my 52mm PTE in.(It still is not coperating with me though  )

The main difference between the T-25 and 14b that I can think of is achievable performance. The T-25 is pretty much pushed to its limits as it is stock. Dropping in a 3in exhaust, FMIC, and other parts will not yield you much in the way of increased performance simply because of the fact that the T-25 is already flowing at its max. The 14b on the other hand will allow you to pick up more power while you are preparing you car for that huge turbo because it will push more boost than it is set at stock. In my opinion, since it sounds like you are pushing to get a big turbo someday in the future anyway then it really doesn't matter which one you go with. I would just get which ever you can get the cheapest, preferring the T-25 if pricing is the same because of the easily install though.
