I am a little confused on the dsmlink.. Do you have to change your ECU if you dont have a 95 eprom model ecu???

Wouldnt the car have some problems running/idleing etc. with a completely different ecu?

I had no problems with idle or initial start-up when I swapped mine in. I swapped my sparkplug wires, plugged in the ecu, and fired it up and it found idle right away. :thumb:

It's the same kind of ECU, just with a different type of chip. The programming is the same.

If you are putting a 95 or 96 ECU into a 97+ car or a car equipped with a 1g CAS. You will notice some hesitation/surging during normal cruising.
But this is fixed by hooking your labtop up to the DSMlink and clicking "invert CAS"

Do you need a logger still or can you monitor/tune everything through the laptop? Sorry for the newbie questions

what about thelabtop?
can i use my pc thats at my house??
i mean it should work right cause all i would need would be a longer cable to hookup the ecu to the computer and then..well actually first take the computer to the garage ..
am i correct?
thanks guys
oh and i still need to send my ecu to them since im sure mine is as it came off from the factory

Yeah, you can use your desktop PC, as long as it has a DB9 serial connector on the back. It would seem a little impractical, though, but I don't see why it wouldn't work.

It's cheap on Ebay.

Ok...hal said this in another post...and he was kind of an ass about it.

But...why does everyone keep writing LABTOP...its a LAPTOP...I could understand if it only happened in one post, but b and p are on different sides of the keyboard...how does this keep happening.

Alright...I feel better now that I tought people something. Now...looks like the guys question is already answered...yes you need a 95 Eprom ECU, no it wont mess the car up, it will learn the car, you will tune it...everything works out great...people already gave you the heads up on Invert CAS (Cam Angle Sensor) and swaping plug wires...

any other questions?

Ohh...and about using your desktop...well...you could tune with it...but I don't know how your going to log...you would have to bring the computer with you as you did a pull...doing 100+mph...your going to need a LONG cord...LOL that one was funny. But yes you could hook it up to the car while it is in the garage and running to tune...but you need to log before you tune...so...and normally you would do a pull...tune...do another pull...tune some more...and keep going...Can't you at least borrow a friends laptop?

ok so ha ha a i feel like an ass now (good thing it was here and not in the real world otherwise i would have been embarrased) i guess i never payed attention on how to spell LAPTOP (happy) o well
I only need the dsmlink to set the idle speed a bit higher than stock and to rid myself of the REM from my swap. Im runing stock fuelsystem and turbo (12psi) so i wont be doing much tuning as of now..
thanks though and thanks for teaching me how to spell LAPTOP

hehe LOL...no problem...;)

And yeh...if your not going to do any actual tunning with DSMlink where you would need to datalog pulls, then you could you your home PC to raise idle. that will suck though to bring all that shit into the garage for only 2-3 minutes and then bring it all back in...ohh well...at least you'll save a couple hundred bucks for now. But also, they do have software that you can run on a PDA and use DSMLink...maybe you could try that as well...PDA's are pretty cheap.

DAMN...PDA's are that expensive...I thought they were way less than that...like 100-300...ohh well, that goes to show that I have never looked into buying one.

And I understand being low on funds...so am I.

Don't you at least have one friend with a laptop though? I mean all you have to do is install some software and use it for a few minutes...and if you could, you could use it for an hour or so just to get some practice datalogging and tuning.

PDA's that work with DSMLink can be had for under $50 if you bother to shop around and a laptop can be had for a couple of hundred.
