1990 RPM Wire
I'm looking for the correct wire to use as a RPM signal for both the translator and a Profrom shift light. I have a 1990 Turbo which is different from the 91+ first gen's. According to the pinouts from vfaq.com it appears that Pin 21 looks to be the correct wire on the ECU. Although is there anyplace under the hood I could use. I spoke with Mike from Ramchargers and he told me pin #58, although it appears that is for the 2G cars?

I'm sure that someone out there has used the translator on a 1990 Turbo, so I need to know some detailed instuctions on what wire to splice into!

Any help would be great!

Give me till later on tonight and I can get you a pic of were I tap for mine. Got to fix buck problem when boost comes on:cry:

That would be tha shitn*t !!!
I need all the help I can get here and I really don't want to tap the ECU if I don't have to! I want to keep this under the hood.

Thanks.

Subject: Re: [dsmtranslator] Re: RPM wire

I dont know about your cars but my 90 has a female connector from the factory
for testing/hooking up a tach to test for engine prolbems...its taped to one
of the harness's on the firewall right next to the intake manifold...might
actually be the same harness that the cam angle sensor eventually leads to.
Check your shop manual. Thats where I tapped into the rpm signal and I have
not had any prolbems!!!

I got this from the translator list...I will post it if it works.

That wire is a no go...I got my car back together. I have to make sure eveyrthing is perfect although the MAF translator still blinks green which means there is no RPM signal. Even the 90 service manual has thisd picture...and I'm spliced into this wire...although I still can't figure out what the hell is going on!?!?
Here is a picture for reference, it may work for some 90 owners...although not mine...I will figure it out soon though!

Follow the wire/wires under the cas it's either a black or a white wire you can use. I found this out the hard way since I couldn't get a good t-tap. follow these wires to the back of the fire wall and you can tap either of the two.

Since it's so late I'll post the pics tomm. For my car it took about 2 hrs for some reason or another (dsm's how sweet they are) for the maf to read the rpm singal and now everything works fine minus a thing or two. Hope this helps some what.

I wish I had my damn digital camera it would make it so much easier! I tried using the yellow wire and the black wire...although not the white...maybe I should have, because it would have made a difference.

Do you mean it took like 2 hours for the stock computer to work with the translator? I have a shift light and I will hook up the shift light wire to the white wire...and see what results I get.

Thanks.

look up an afc wiring diagram.it gets a tach signal from some where.may not help but just an idea.

look for a connector right above the hood release. my diagrams show that you can either pick up a tach signal there or go to the instrument cluster (yeah right) i install a lot of remote starts and have used this wire. to test for a good tach signal. hook up a digital multi meter. set it to ac voltage. turn on the car, rev the engine. the voltage should go up and down in accordance with the revving. good luck. btw, the wire color should be white :)

Did you get your problem fixed.I have a 90 & wired it to the black wire at the CAS.I didnt have any problems with that. I hope you get it fixed. Good Luck.

Somone on the DSM Translator Yahoo group suggested the white wire from the CAS. I hooked mine up to that and didnt have any problems.
Thanks.
Joe

I originally tapped into the black wire. I thought every thing was ok, no blinking green light. Then today I opened the box and saw the green light blinking. I tested the connector, in the diagram higher up in this thread, with a multimeter, it tested good so I plugged into it and no blinking light, but it f'd my tach up. I next tried the white wire, it tested good and doesn't screw my tach up.

They say to use the black wire.I did start having problems with this. If you go to the connector for the CAS you will see the wires change colors after the connector. The black wire changes to yellow.I went to the yellow wire & have had no more trouble.
