Hey all,

So, as of right now I am what you'd call a well educated person, who has never actually gotten to tune a FI engine with a tuning device. I actually am a high school auto shop teacher. I like doing tuning/racing stuff because I love sharing it wit the kids.

Anyway, I have had a few DSMs and currently have a 3kgt vr4. I own a SAFC, but have never had time to install it on a car. My simple question is this- If I wanted to tune an ECU not only for WOT power, but also for best lean operation at highway cruising, what type of tuning system do I have to be running? Is that where AEM stuff comes into play (or DSM link?), or is that possible on a piggyback system like SAFC?

Like I said, I understand all of the processes and I know the air fuel ratios I want in different conditions, but I wasn't sure which management systems would give me the freedom to make those changes... Personally, I I ever got around to doing this on my car, I'd like to tune it to get god gas mileage (lean cruise) as well as a nice safe (richer) WOT operation... Not just one or the other...

Anyway, in a nutshell- which systems can do that/which can't...

Thanks a ton! This is one of the best forums I've ever participated in. Appreciate the help!

For all around function, features, support, customization and usability...ECMLink. SAFC is good but only up to a certain point.

Not quite sure why he said ecmlink when you have a 3k???
I'm not familiar with 3kgts and there tuning options. I'm also not sure you would be able to accomplish this with an safc. If I were you I would try to find a forum that focused more on 3ks instead of DSMs. The only site I personally know of for 3kgts is 3si.org. You could do some searching around on there or google, and im sure you could find some options faster than you will on here. Mainly because I'm sure most on here are not familiar with them. Good luck and I'm sorry I couldn't be more help.

There are a Lot more options then people realize depending on the platform... SAFC being on the Lowest end of the Totem poll... an is never going to get you what your really looking to do from the sounds of it. It also as the most draw backs.

The majority of people here as far as Dsm's are concerned are going to recommend V3 Ecmlink... I stress the ECM part as the old DSMlink is not even in the same ballpark IMHO. It's a great Product but not the End all.

What year is your 3kgt? The later years have flashable ECU's like the Evo's and 98/99 Dsm's... .

In the end it really comes down to what your Goals are, What your budget is, and just how DYI you really are depending on what route you end up going with a EMS.

I don't think that anyone can truly give an answer unless you know all the options available and decide based on what it will offer.

As far as DSM's go here is something to read up on a few options for tuning http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/articles-tuning-ecu/406033-tuning-solutions-you.html

EDIT mis-read Had as Have... Just let everyone know as much as you can about the Car an you will get the most help.
