advancing the timing??


from what i was told the timing should be at 5* btdc would it hurt anything if i were to do it at like 8* or so?

No, that's just so you can sync the mechanical with the electrical. When you ground the check timing connector the ECU locks it's timing advance to 5* BTDC so you can adjust the CAS so it matches the engine.

During operation the timing advance comes from the ECU maps and depends on load and RPM.

now i am confused again, dont i just time it like its an old chevy with a timing gun and moving the cas to set the timing

You really should check it so you know for sure. The timing can be off quite a bit and still "run fine" so be very careful. Try not to ever take shortcuts with these cars, trust me, it will bite you in the ass.
