smoking ecu

hi there
after starting the car today and letting it idle for a while
it died and i heard a buzzing noise like the fuelpump was still working
after that i saw smoke coming from the centerconsole
so after shutting everything off
i pulled out my ecu and saw that it was fried
i added some pics so you guys can see what part of the ecu was fried
i have an other ecu lying around but i want to make sure what caused the problem
was it the fuel pump still running after the car died, or was it the short in the ecu that caused the fuelpump to keep running?
let me know what you guys think

i would say the short caused the pump to keep running

Capacitor shorted out and burned up. I doubt any external cause, it's a common problem and one of the reasons why it's suggested to replace the original capacitors on any 1G ECU.

It's very possible that the damage caused the control signal to the MPI relay that runs the fuel pump to be shorted to ground which would cause the pump to run whenever the ignition switch was on.
