Ok, I have a 98 GST and I recently did the 1g CAS swap so i didnt have to tear half the timing belt covers an all off to do the CPS(because it was bad). Now my car is running really $hitty and I was told that the timing is off. How exactly, and what do I have to do, to adjust my timing??? I got a timing light from a friend but just have no idea on what to do. I don't believe it's supposed to be TDC, so is it supposed to be retarded a little or what?? A complete step by step with any readings/numbers I'm supposed to get would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a lot in advance!!! :thumb:

If you have DSMlink, that helps a lot! :)

What you have to do is have someone sit in the car with it on and idling. That person must watch the logger and see what the timing is doing. Meanwhile, you have to point a timing light at the crank pulley and turn the CAS back and forth until what the person in the car is reading matches what you see with the timing light. If you have dsmlink, ground the timing via the miscelanious tab and set the timing with a timing light. It should be locked at 5 degrees.

EDIT:

As per numbers, in a perfect world, timing should be set to 5 degrees at TDC. However, cams, failing sensors, etc. keeps our idle from being spot on.(at least mine but I also have cams and some other mods which make idling difficult). In your case, just make sure that what you see on the logger matches what you are seeing with the timing light.

i know, i need to but i dont have the extra cash right now, i just had to pay tuition for college next semster :( i wish i had friends that had dsm's but unfortunately thats not the case. if theres anyone on here that lives close to me... Parkesburg, PA and has one that you would come and let me use, let me know.... any other info would be great too. thanks

Its unfortunate, but without a logger, you're kind of stuck. You could at least just get a timing light, I think Autozone might rent them out, and try and set the motor to the closest possible range to 5 degrees. I know that when I did my head swap and forgot my timing light at home, I positioned the CAS to the exact center of its position. When I got a chance to set the timing, It was at 6 degrees.
