EGT's staying too low?

Hey guys,

Since getting my 650's, AFCII, and Datalogger installed, I have been playing around with tuning, trying different boost levels and even experimenting with 100 octane unleaded race gas. In all of my experiences with the Talon so far, my EGT has always remained consistantly low when making WOT runs, and I'm starting to wonder if there might be something wrong with the gauge or probe, or if I'm just in good shape and there is no problem.

During normal cruising on the freeway, around 75 MPH at 3000+ RPM, my EGT usually stays between 950-1050 degrees Fahrenheit. During normal stop-and-go driving where I cruise at around 50-55 MPH when not stopped in traffic, the EGT stays around 850 degrees F.

Now, when I make my tuning and test runs WOT, I do them in 3rd gear punching it at 2500 and taking it just a hair above redline, like 7100 RPM for logging purposes. When I make these runs, however, my EGT will only climb to *maybe* 1100 degrees F and no higher. This is whether I've tuned for the current boost level or not, and this can be anywhere from 15 to as high as 22-23 PSI of boost on my setup.

I read many people saying they average around 1400 degrees F during WOT runs, and I'm wondering why my EGT's stay so low in comparison? There *might* have been a time or two where the EGT got as high as 1200, when I'd do some prolonged WOT runs or prolonged spirited driving, but for any single pull they never go above 1100.

Is this normal, especially considering the boost I am pushing? Or might I have faulty EGT sensing equipment?

On a side note, tuned at these boost levels the timing is great, the car pulls nicely, and everything seems to be running perfectly smoothly.

If the logger shows that timing isn't being pulled and that the car pulls very smoothly up to redline, I would think that it's the EGT probe itself.

On my setup with the Big 16G @ 20psi on the stock SMIC and supporting fuel mods, I cruise on the highway at 1400 and finish my WOT pulls in 3rd around 1560 with 3 counts of knock. Idle when warm is usually around 950-1000.

I'd check to make sure that the probe is seated properly and that it's in your #1 runner of the manifold. If everything seems to be OK there, then I would replace it and see if it gives you different readings. Also, since you have more than adequate fuel support for the EVO III, I'd try some runs on pump gas and see if that makes a difference.

Not to change the subject, but I'm very interested in the DejonTool SMIC. I was wondering what your impressions were and whether you feel that it supports your EVO III well enough.

Thanks for the reply. I'll definately take a look at the probe. I usually run Sunoco 94 and the EGT's behave identically to how they do with this 100 in the tank. Back when I had my T-25 when I first got the car last year, the EGT's behaved exactly the same also.

My E316G was a worse performer than the T-25 at about 15 PSI on the stock SMIC. As soon as I did the turbo swap and tried it out, I knew the stock SMIC wouldn't cut it, so I ordered the Dejon Super-Big SMIC. As soon as I installed it and took the car out for a drive, the SMIC made all the difference in the world, so I highly recommend it if you want to stay SMIC. I don't want an FMIC and didn't want to hack my car for a Supra Sidemount, so if you're willing to drop the cash on a new sidemount I'd say the Dejon is one of the best out there.

I still have yet to take the Talon to the strip, so I won't know what my setup is capable of for some time, but so far I'm happy with my choice of SMIC's. I'll most likely be doing water/alky injection down the road so I'm planning on staying with this sidemount.

Thanks for the info on the DejonTool unit. I know that the stocker is a nasty flow restriction when it comes to medium range turbos like the E3 and Big 16G so that's the route I'll likely go since I prefer the stock look as well.

Regarding your issue, I'd simply change the probe out. If it was doing this with the T-25 then it sounds like the same problem has carried over on the E3.
