New DSM owner from PR
Just bought this DSM for a good price
the car is bone stock
im looking for 300-350 whp daily driver
everything to be bolt on
with what should i start ?
(already read the tech info, faq etc)

Start with your maintenance. How many miles are on it? Now is a good time to replace the timing belt, accessory belts, do a compression test, thermostat, coolant flush, oil changes in the: engine & trans. Pull the spark plugs out and read them. Replace with NGK. Bleed the brakes: get all that old dirty fluid out of there, replace with clean/clear fluid. Do that also to the clutch system.
Then you will be ready for some mods. I suggest you start with the free mods and work your way up. I have always found it easier and better to work on your fuel system first. No matter what you do to your fuel system you can tune it down to work with your stock parts. Then you will have the flexibility to go with bigger/better aftermarket stuff on everything else.

Yea I actually agree with you on this. Fuel mods first is a great idea, because if you go the opposite way, like me, I got all this potential power, bigger turbo, colder air, but I can;t tune much with it because I need more fuel.
I would first get DSMlink, and than do fuel mods, than turbo. I know you probably wanna throw a big turbo on there now, but it won't do you any good unless you do it in the right order.

is it necesary to spend
$500+ on DSMLink or $1500 for a AEM EMS for my hp goal?
i know it would be better to have a standalone ecu
but is it an overkill for my goal ?
the engine rebuild will be first ...

You're going to have to have something to adjust for larger injectors. 450's aren't gonna cut it for 300-350hp. You could probably get by with a SAFC if you are only going to get up to 650cc injectors. If you get larger than 650's then your timing advance with a SAFC is going to be too high and you will get knock. So make a decision. Stay lower than 650's or plan to get DSMlink. The mod bug is addictive and once you want to go larger you would need to sell your SAFC get DSMlink and get even larger injectors. Stay true to your goal and you will get by with just a SAFC or MAFT. Now, on the other hand a way to cope with the higher timing with larger injectors is to run E85 or some water/meth injection but I'm not sure you're ready for that.
BTW, what's wrong with the engine that it needs a rebuild? A stock block can handle your goal.

basic rebuild, timing belt, gaskets, all fluids etc...
how about removing the balance shaft ??
for tuning i already used the AEM FIC piggyback in another car (Turbo Subaru Impreza GC8) and i loved it
it can retard timing and tune for afr by changing the injectors signal or the MAF signal
so no prob with too much timing
also has a built in MAP sensor
data logger and other usefull features
had any dsm owner used it ?

My goal is 350 HP and I would not loose DSMlink over anything. Stutterbox, anti-lag, airflow adjustments and fuel adjustments and timing adjustments all over the rpm spectrum. Plus you can make 1150cc idle like stock, just with a few adjustments. I know when I first started tuning I could think of alot of things I could spend 500 bucks on, I am only 20, I had big dreams of turbo and BOV and stuff. But I am so glad I got DSMlink first.
Now when it comes to using the MAFT to tune, it isn't very percise. Even when I set it for the correct stock injectors I am running, the car worked fine, but I still was able to tune airflow values over the rpm band different than what was stock. If you don't have DSMlink, you will be stuck with variances of up to +/-10% off the actual correct air flow values.
I don't know a whole lot about SAFC, except that it too limits the way you can tune. I have an E3 16g and will easily get me over 300hp, and I am looking to get FIC 850cc. They are the same price of the 750s, but with the added fuel I will be running a lower IDC, and give me the option in the future to upgrade to a 50 trim if I loose interest in the 16g.
It is all your call, and you will look back on this and may or may not go man he was right. But I could link you to my first post and everyone here said it and I just ignored them, but I am too embarressed to look back to how ignorant I was. 5 DSMs later and I am starting to see what everyone meant. If your not new to this, do as you will. But that is the advice from personal experience, and really I'm just passing on what everyone here taught me.

so i have a 97 dsm
does it have the EPROM ?
or just the 95 ecu's have it ?
