man, what cops are doing to crack down on people. i was driving around today in hunington park right. right in front of home depot on sluson st. there were cops pulling people onto the side and smog them on a portable unit. they did to find a life.

Was it random or only imports? I used to work a few blocks from there. (assuming you meant Huntington Park, and Slauson)

That's not the cops. It's the B.A.R. The people who regulate the smog testing stuff for California. I use to work at ESP smog machines, and would have to go out to these random places they chose around the south bay area to work on the machine if it breaks down. It's not a "registered" test. They just need to get readings, but thats what they told me. The CHP ask to pull you over, but it's voluntary. I'm AWD so I can't get tested on the dyno, but it's also random on the places they choose to do this. I remember sitting there one time and a driver started arguing with the CHP officer about taking the test, and they told the guy it was voluntary so the guy drove away.

cool...so next time if that happens i'll be sure to say no thanks and drive off in their face

If it's voluntary, then what's the point of it?

They study the readings from different areas, seeing if the smog program is helping or not. People don't know it's voluntary because you got a CHP officer flaggin you down, and you tend to listen to what they say. They pull off random cars. I really don't know what exactly they do with the data.
