I'm buying a 1g awd from LA and it needs some work to pass smog. so i need someone with some knowledge to help me get this running up to par to pass smog. the registration is bad so i cant bring it on our base and the stickers are out of date so thats an issue as well. so if anyone ca help me out please let me know. so far all i know is that it sputters under hard acceleration thats all i was told so far but iam getting a good deal for it and want a 1g.

Take it to AAA and have them do a full inspection of the vehicle. Seriously. Might cost a little, but it's SO damned worth it. They would have caught the bad axles, oil leaks, bent control arm, and other nonstandard damage that came with my car, if I'd been willing to shell out a few bones.

Sounds like it's running rich under accel, or may have an exhaust leak depending on how you define 'sputtering'. Have a mod list? Any tuning tools, or just as stock as can be?

I do have a mechanic in Burbank, though that's a bit of a trip from Oxnard (PHNSWD?). Does cheap rates with my hookup, charges you at-cost for parts, and gets the problem figured out and fixed quicker than most mechanics I've gone to before... just so long as he has a rack free. Hell, if it's a simple fix, might just get him to nail down the problem, then run off and fix it. ;D

Oh, and HOW is it not passing smog? NOx would be the cat, HC is a combustion issue. Other crap (improper base idle speed, surging is harder) tends to be a lot simpler.
And bear in mind that AWD vehicles do NOT go on the dyno for smog in CA, ever. Two-speed idle only.

how about this, first check your plugs and wires, this is a must, if your plugs or wires are bad, sputtering under hard acceleration will occur, next check your i/c piping if you have a boost leak it will also cause it to sputter, lastly ill go to oxnard and work on it for you at a decent price, if you are interested pm me ur #, im really good with these cars and know a good deal about them
