Im thinking of picking up my cams soon since I want to start getting the car tuned and cant do it till I have my cams.. which cams do you think would be better the HKS or Web Cams??

I know with HKS supposedly you will pass emissions, you wont with web cams.. and the Web Cams supposedly have had a few bad grinds?? But the Web Cams are cheaper.. does anyone know if they both make the same power?? and the cheapest place to get HKS Cams?

i think the Web's actually make maybe 5-10 more HP, but the HKS 264/264 should idle alot better. Since you have an AFC, I think the HKS would be the better choice, unless you like Lopey idle :> some people do and some don't. A friend has the web's on his 99 GS-T..its tolerable with the DSM-Link...he was having a hard time idling with the AFC. Then again, he has a beefed up fuel system with a T3/T4 Turbo and all the BPU's.

I am going with the HKS cams. That's what Loren had in his car 264/264. I called Robert at Forced because I was considering going 264 intake and 272 exhaust which should result in more HP...he said that 264's should be plenty however. I am still uncertain what size I will get.

The HKS are around 550-575 just about everywhere u look...RRE etc. I think the Webs are around 100 bucks cheaper at RRE.

I'm in this same dilema right now Larry. I've heard the same about Web having put out some "bad" grinds. I have also heard that the problem has been 100% remedied. From what I understand, the Web streets and the HKS 264/272 combo make about the same HP. The cheapest I've found for the Web's is $450 from RRE. Cheapest on HKS's that I've found is $600 from Buschur (used to be RRE but I don't know if they have any in stock). As far as emissions is concerned I wouldn't know on that one. Fortunately I don't have emissions here so that won't be a factor for me. Right now I'm leaning toward the Web's due to pricing. If I can find the HKS's for less somewhere then I may go with those. Hopefully I'll have them and my leaking HG changed w/in the next 3-4 weeks. We'll see.


To add to what Violator101 wrote, I have heard of idle issues w/ the Web's as well. I have also heard that the Web's don't get along with the VPC. Both were concerns for me. I called around to some shops. Talked to Jeff at Turbotrix (I get 90% of my stuff through him. Great guy.), Dan at Buschur, and some of the guys at RRE and Extreme. All said that both can be "fixed". As with anything else it's just all in the tuning.

On one other note, my friend here sold his 91 Talon about 4 months ago. It was fully built, 95 pistons, massively ported head, 1/2" fuel lines, SX reg., 550's, VPC/GCC, 20G, FMIC, etc. He was running a set of the GUDE cams. I didn't even know GUDE had cams for our cars until I looked them up on their site. Price isn't listed, you'll have to call, but let me tell you...they made his car sound MEAN and had a hell of a top end pull to em. Didn't hurt idle "too much" either (hell, all cams are gonna effect idle some! .

hmm.. so one for Web Cams and one for HKS Cams.. thats not helping my decision .. i guess it all comes down to if I can tolertate the bad idle for 100 less..

You should have started a poll I vote for HKS cams I ridden in cars with both types of cams and let me say HKS is my choice. Better Idle and more power. You get what you pay for.

I ordered my Web cams yesterday. For the price I do not think you can argue. I really wanted the HKS, but I just could not bring my self to spend the $600+ on them. The webs have such a problem with idle because of the overlap they have.

Another choice is the Crower. From what I have heard they have a good idle. I have not seen any dyno number YET for them. On paper they have huge lift and long duration (fast ramp speeds) They do not have the overlap like the webs do.

they have regrinds and or the new happy BILLET cams. for roughly the same price, these are pretty lil things too
never been a fan of HK$ cams myself. seemed a little over priced for something everyone else has cheaper.

I do have a friend that is putting in the Web cams Race grind 2. These are VERY SICK CAMS!!! He should have his car back together in a month. Those are the ones that I want to feel!!!

well, I have heard some bad things on web cams if you are running a vpc. if you dont plan on using a vpc go with the web cams if you plan on using one stick with the hks cams. I read some where that the web cams do something funky with the vacume and the vpc doenst like it. I have neither right now but I plan on the hks cams as soon as I get the cash together

guess I just changed my mind I talked to tim at BR he recomended the crower cams and for 450 I dont think that I can go wrong, they arnt quite as extreme as the hks hence they dont have the idle affects that the hks do.

Summit racing or JC whitnety have the Crower cams. I don't remember which one. They were a little cheaper then $450 I think... I want to say around $425.

i am getting the 272 hks race cams. both are very good cams, i chose hks cus they are less lumpy at idle and i will be driving my car around daily, and the po pos here are pricks.... they pull you over if they dont like the sound of your car hehe.

HKS !! Nothing has more power under the curve than the HKS cams, assuming that they are comparable in size. The web 546/547 will make about 5 - 10 more hp up near redline but the HKS 264's walk all over them in mid range torwu and hp and produce more of both under the curve. I have the 264's and they are great. Idles like stock. They are for sale by the way because I am moving up to the 272's.

Here is another reason not to buy webs. Look closely and you can see that the lobes have worn down quiet substantially. It looks like they have ears.

No cams will get along great with a VPC the reason is that the VPC needs a vacuum signal and cams screw with that. My buddies Talon idles a lot better with a pair of 272s them mine with the web cam street. HKS cams will idle significantly better than the webs because they have less overlap. The price is definitely worth it IMO Most of the people running great times and making big power are using 272s. I will be switching eventually when I get some funds together.

seems like its still a toss up..does anyone have any definite dyno'd of before and after installing HKS cams?

I have the HKS 272/272 but i will be trying the crower 64415 as soon as carshop gets them from crower, i ordered them in a group buy like a month ago and they didnt have any of the 64415s.

I would vote for HKS. I have done some reading a while back and saw too many problems with Web (although their quality maybe better now). Also, those that have ran great times are using HKS. I've got my 264s from Mike R. that ran 120mph on it. He went with 272s.

Larry you should try to get in contact with Brian at Forced Performance. He just went from the web 546/547 to the HKS 264's. He says he can tell a difference on the butt dyno.

I am thinking about purchasing some hks cams for my 97 Eclipse GSX and wanted to know what everyone thought the right set up is to go. 264in/264ex 272in/272ex 264in/272ex 272in/264ex? I've seen that people do a lot of different setups. I am running an 18G turbo 75hp nx nos kit, ported exhaust manifold, evo III o2, and custom 3" cat and downpipe with a greddy exhaust. I eventually want to go for rods, pistons and a lightened crankshaft when more money comes around.

Any info is appreciated,
