So I didnt make it to the track last Friday and I was pretty bummed about it. My car has two really big problems right now. The mini me battery is just dying left and right and I can no longer seem to get the car to idle right. The battery hasnt been a problem until just now and the idle has been a little annoying ever since Ohio.
Wes (HighPsi91) stopped by my house last night to try and diagnose the problem. Just to give you a good mental image I have the Talon parked in the side lot by my house. I have an extension cord running across the whole yard because my 386 laptop doesnt have a working battery. I also have the Neon plugged into the Talon via jumper cables because we had to keep starting the car.
So Wes is taking a look at the Haltech maps and seeing if something changed. The car will fire with some work every time but it refuses to hold idle. Normally the car takes a bit of work to fire but after you hold it at 2k for about 45 seconds it will idle just fine. But recently it wont idle no matter what I do. So Wes is doing his thing for awhile then checking all the connections etc. Then he has me try starting the car while he observes the engine bay. I fire the motor up a few times and he exclaims in his very deadpan monotone ok I found the problem.
So I jump out of the car and ask him whats up because the way he said that it didnt sound like anything simple or cheap was the problem. So he points to the intake manifold and says thats your problem its cracked. Now he was really upset because he has the same damn Venom intake manifold. You would not believe how bad this thing is cracked. It literally goes from one end to the other.
So I called my buddy Dave (GSX4Life) to tell him what happens. As soon as I tell him he starts laughing his ass off. Im like dude thats not very cool. He says no you dont get it. You blew the welds to you intake manifold. Then the little light bulb went off in my head too and I got a nice laugh out of it. He then asked why I have been ignoring the danger to manifold warning on my standalone and asked me if I checked the bolts on my floor board because he heard they can fall out in situations like this.
The good new is that I found the reason that my car has been running like shit over the weekend. The bad news is that I have to rip the intake manifold off and get it rewelded. So that that means Im going to have to spend a couple of bucks for a good shop to weld it and Im going to be out of action for at least another week.
Im not sure what this says about the Venom intake manifold. I always knew it was a POS but it is a VERY nice design and works REALLY well in my setup. I took a look at their website today and they dont have ANY contact numbers. Im sure if I did call them they would find a way to blame it on me or my car. The first thing Wes said after it was broken was that my motor mounts are god awful and need to be ripped out. My car does vibrate A LOT. But I dont know if that's what's at fault. As long as this next weld job will fix any poor QC at Venom I will be happy. If it become a problem after that though I will be pissed
