I own a 93' Plymouth Laser with a 1.8Liter engine. I am not interested in swapping engines or getting rid of this car. I drive it daily and constantly abuse this car and it has never broke down or left me stranded. I am asking for other 1.8 owners to join me in requesting that DSMTuners.com give us our own forum. There are not many go fast goodies available for our engine. Sure there are performance mufflers and K&N filters, but not much more in the realm of affordability. If we want a cam, we have to send it off to be reground to performance specs, because no one makes a hot cam for our motor. J&E makes customs forged pistons for the 1.8 (high compression and nitrous applications). There are performance clutches and ignition components too. Let us not forget about nitrous. There are kits up to 75hp for stock cars and they cost about $500. I also found an engine rebuild kit that includes new pistons for $500. After picking through the non turbo forum, I have picked up performance tips from others - such as removing the air silencer, removing the power steering belt (I don't recomend it), punching the catalytic converter out and hacking the air can. And we can fabricate our own ram air system. If we can get a forum strictly for 1.8 performance, information can be shared much easier than having to pick through all of the 2.0 stuff without having to hear "Buy another car and save money". There has been one DSM member who has installed a turbo on his car. I saw the pictures and it was a beautiful sight. With our own forum, we can have easier access to information such as how to do this to our own cars. Maybe an aftermarket company will realize we have maoney to spend and an interest in modifying our cars and will produce more than what's out there now (because there isn't much). I ask you all to contact DSMTuners and help us to gain our own 1.8 forum. Thank you.

I am with you a 100% man. I too am a 1.8 owner and too have found little availability of parts and info. So lets go out there and kick some ass. Not really but lets get something done about this.

sorry dude, i really dont like talk for some reason, i think it would be pretty cool to have a 1.8 specific forum,(much like the 4G63 forum available......

I totally agree, get a 1.8 Forum on here, so I can talk on here. Kalani destroyed me on DSMtalk and had me banned, but on here I am willing to help anybody. My 1.8 Turbo is almost done. I am willing to help anyone do a 1.8 Turbo cheap and effectively.

And don't listen to Kalani, I really do know what I am talking about... I build engines on a regular basis.

We gotta show em' that we love our cars. If enough of us write in about it, they'll realize that its a great way to go. I think DSMTuners a great site and I don't see how they could ignore us if there is enough interest in such a forum.
I have been working on finding performance parts for the 1.8L engine and the list is growing. Right now I have found enough parts to build a monster out of the 1.8. I have found forged pistons by J&E custom made (even for larger bores), billet connecting rods, and several companies that can regrind the camshaft to performance specs. Of course if you build a motor like this, it's perfect for nitrous. I talked with a tech rep at Nitrous Express and said that such a motor could handle up to a 125HP shot of Nitrous without touching the stock fuel system.
I have not been able to locate a header yet, but I'm considering having one built locally. Next its a bigger ram air for my car. I'm not stopping until I hit the 300HP mark... of course that's on nitrous.
Please... all 1.8 owners... write in and request our own forum. Thanks to you all and happy driving!!!

Hell Yeah! I rely on fast1.8sohcDSM and Thehyena for most of the information I get off this site. Its supposed to be a community that brings us all together yet we R the little jewish kid on Christmas(no offense to any of you Jewish DSM ownerz) What im saying is, it would be a great gesture by DSMTuners.com to give us our own forum so we could share our own information and not be fed flaming msg's about getting a newer car or trading it in. WE LOVE OUR 1.8'z! Even if their slow, to start. But with work the 4g37 is 1 damn good engine. I've torn it apart, up and down and still i alwayz get it 2gether and its alwayz there 4 me. PLZ read this DSM modz and help us help each other! 1.8z !!

Thankz~ PeaCe

okya, report a post isn't a tool to get moderators to pay attention to a thread, if you want that then just send chris or one of the moderating team a pm.

That would be me. Anyone who wants to do this knows to find me on DSMTalk with the rest of the 4G37 enthusiasts. Pretty much the unofficial 4G37 guru there.

It's awesome to see turbo's on the 1.8's!!! You guys have to give up more picks... and please tell us exactly how you did it! Until I know for sure how to monkey with fitting a turbo on mine, I have to plan on nitrous. I am greedy and eventually want both. I haven't heard yet from the powers that be on getting our own 1.8 forum, but I'm gonna give a few more days. I hope there are other requests going in and not just my poor excuse for begging. I guess we may have to settle for a thread ... for now! Let's keep bugging em'! Thanks.
P.S. I just installed a K&N filter on a hacked open air can... I didn't have a chance to try it out on the road. Now that I've got new wheels and tires (with a couple other goodies) I guess I'll take a pic of my car and post it. I do have the UGLY pics while it was under construction, just before I painted it. I 'll have to put them up too. "The Good, The Bad and the Just Damn Ugly!

Us? I am the only one on the planet with a running 4G37 turbo. I would appreciate it if you did not group me with anyone else who is claiming to be building one. The faq I wrote (which everyone else is using as a bible) is on DSMTalk. Photos are in my gallery.

On another note, watch who you worship. There is a difference between a true creator and a mere publicist. And some peoples idea of "reasearch and development" is just finding the money to duplicate what someone else has already done - right down to the brand names.

If anyone wants information on a WORKING turbo setup, which has already been tested and dyno'd - not a theoretical "almost done" turbo setup (which is turning out to be nothing but a poorly copied rendition of mine) - you know where to find me.

Mr. Ginsu, I cannot prove nor disprove anyones claim to having a turbo. I realize that there may be others out there in the act of building a turbo 1.8 and they may have done something (Or in the process of doing something different) in their set-up. Being that your car is the only one that I have seen the pics of with a turboed 1.8, I'll give you the 1st honors. I'm trying to encourage all of the 1.8 owners to share information on how to upgrade our cars and each one of us has a unique piece of information that another can use. You have ventured into the turbo arena and we all want to know how you did it and what parts you used, but there are others who no doubt will follow on the path to forced induction on their 1.8 and it would be appreciated if they would share their success and failures with the rest of us. Knowlege is power and any attempt to supress it is folly. Thank you all.

I think that we should not talk about anyones turbo system being a failure until it is done. Thanks. Again, I am willing to help anyone build a cheap and well worthy turbo system for half the cost. I have spent about... 980 on block parts, and externals barely anything. Ebay is the best place to search for parts, they have turbochargers, boost controllers, stand alones, fuel controllers, turbo timers, and turbo accessories like mad on there for low cost! Some parts are brand new for even half the cost. I got my AFCII for 325 shipped. Both boost and A/F gauge for 109. Being turbo never has been easier, without ebay I would have had to spend twice as much. I am willing to help anyone get parts. I am just willing to help. Even the Mighty Kalani asked me how to get the timing belt gears off the crank shaft. So I have some good useful tips for everyone.

Not only that, but I have the actual service manuel for our cars, and I am willing to copy pages for you for anything you plan to do with your car. Thanks

Shawn

I own a dead 1.8, so is that half a vote? Basically, it gets all the hand-me-downs from my talon (wheels, brakes, etc).

Mmmmm... E-Bay? I must admit that I've never even glimpsed at e-bay. Maybe out of fear - Fear of draining every penny I've got left to my name - Maybe laziness. I shall guide my mouse and keyboard to this mystical place of wordly products and see what it holds for my car and engine. Thanks for the tip. If anybody else has found a hard to find part for their 1.8, please post it here so that we can all add it to our lists... is it just me, or is anybody else making his list and checking it twice? I have a 1991 Eclipse that I'm robbing parts off of for my 93'. I'm about to rip the engine out of it so I can rebuild it while I'm driving on my 93's motor. Can someone recommend a parts house to get valve train components for the 1.8L engine head? The head is a major deal since both of the ones I have have valve stem wear and more than likely are going to need a cam and related parts. Any assistance would be greatly appreciated. Thanks a million.
P.S. The parts needed for a turbo... can someone in the know e-mail me a parts list? Also, is anybody running nitrous on their 1.8? If so, or even if you're planning on it, I humbly beg you to contact me with your results, tips and gripes.

unless that 325 for the s-afc II was canadian money, you didn't do that great pn the price.

I don't get it... What's a 2.0 Turbo owner doing cruzin a 1.8 car thread? I thought it funny because 1.8L guys are laughed at by these people. I guess ya' gotta go where you feel more superior when the bigger dogs spank you.
P.S. If ya' failed to get the fact I'm kidding around then the joke really is on you (Or was I joking? "I'm messing with your mind man") Don't take these things too personally... it's all for fun.

Ah, familiar names! I too own a 1.8L and love it. It would be very nice to have a 1.8L thread on DSMTuners. I've already done some mods and am looking to do more before I get her dynoed.

I would like to say one thing. I know that there are some of us that have had our differences but I think what we need to do is stick together. We don't have to like each other but at least keep it civil. No amount of flaming is going to help anyone. Lets not try to own! one another.

1.8er's unite ;)

Thank You Mr. SaturdayNight! The 1.8 owners should stick together. In fact I have done more for my car since I joined this web site than I would have if I hadn't. It was because of other's tips and encouragement that I have gotten as far as I have with my car. I must say that Mr. Ginsu has inspired me to go turbo. In fact I just found a 2.0 turbo and OEM parts for $75. All I need is to have a header fabricated along with the intercooler piping. Of course I'm in the process of rebuilding the spare engine I have and will install nitrous first. I'll drive that baby around while I build a turbo motor that will also accept the nitrous as well. I have a lot to do and will need as much information as possible from my fellow DSM'ers out there. I just took some new pics of my car to show the changes I've made lately and can't wait to post em' for feedback. Thanks!

Oh, by the way.... I have a 1991 Eclipse that I'm robbing parts off for my car. I have lots of parts that I'm willing to part with that I will not be using on my 93' Laser. If anyone is interested, the car has a working set of pop up headlights (like new) and a good front cap as well as rear bumper. I've taken some of the interior out for my car but most everything is still there. I even have the factory tape deck stereo with equalizer. The "dang thing still works". Anyway... just thought I'd mention it.
