Well I decided to mold a little electronics pod onto my hvac panel to hold my Greddy TT, Profec-B, and Defi Link control unit. Here's the framework for the pod:

And here it is after the first layer. Do you think this looks ok or do I suck at the fiberglassing .

Just post pics when your done and it all painted the same color. So far so good though.

Wow, this is taking longer than I thought. Fiberglass is a bit(h! Here's another pic just to keep you guys updated. It has a couple layers now and i did a test fit to make sure it will work. It's tight fit especially when the head unit folds open to accept a cd but it works perfectly.

The bondo is on and it's almost ready for paint! :thumb: Just need to cut out the holes a bit more and touch up some spots with bondo.

im curious, i may want to make some molds later, but what exactly is bondo and how is it used. I know that fiberglass used some kind of fiber and resin and you make a paste and all and mold it, but how do you apply bondo? Thanks :dsm: BTW looks real nice, paint it with krylon fusion, i hear it works great.

Bondo is kinda like fiberglass resin except thicker. You mix the bondo and hardener then go to work. Spread it on with a plastic spreader or even a kitchen knife and make sure you put it on in fairly thin layers. Sand it smooth then reapply if needed. Bondo just helps you get everything smooth as glass and ready for paint. If you want to thin out the bondo some to make it easier to work with, add some of the fiberglass resin in.

if you know the polyester in the bondo trick -- then you either read alot , or ya have been at this a while. ( or i told you it ) :D
comming along very nicley.... does the thought of mass producing them make you cringe? i get people askin me to make them stuff for them all the time -- i tell them ill do it for a LARGE sum of money. If your Panel starting to get a lil heavy? Keep the pics comming... when its in primmer / paint / clear coated

Ya dave99gst, there's no way in hell I would mass produce these :). I should have some pics of primered/painted today. And TalonRacer, do you mean how long did it take to do just the bondo, or how long did it take from step one?

Thanks guys. From step 1 it probably took me about 6 hours to get to this point. Of course that 6 hours has been spread over like a week. It's taking me longer than expected to get the electronics to fit right. I might have final pics tomorrow.

looks good man, wait till your done. Once you learn how to make fiberglass stuff the power of god is at your hands (as far as car stuff goes). Heres a pic of the first fiberglass thing I ever made.

I am considering doing something custom like you have done yourself. Can you briefly explain all the steps that it takes? This is all I know so far:

1. tape it up to how you want it to come out
2. spread saran wrap over entire area
3. mix the resien
4. dip strips of fiberglass into the resien and apply layers

from here I am lost...I am going to buy an extra bezel from a friend to do my first version....if it doesnt come out right I will still have my stocker :D

Ya, sounds about right man. I didn't even use saran wrap or anything to form it at first, it's not necessary but it would help. Just mix small amounts of resin at a time because it cures fast. I pre-cut pieces that would fit in certain places then mixed up just enough resin for one of those pieces. After the first layer, sand off any major imperfections and keep laying layers until its about 1/4" thick, make sure you don't get too many air bubbles in between layers. At this point, sand off any other major imperfections (there shouldn't be many, don't worry about the minor ones, bondo will fix them) and apply thin layers of bondo, sanding in between each layer to get it really smooth. Then, paint. Here's another pic, painting will come tomorrow if I wake up early enough to get the rest of the stuff done :(.

One question, how are you supporting those right now? Are there boxes built that are holding them in position, or are they just a laying in there at the moment?

As of right now they are just holding their own. They fit in really tight and the frame behind the holes gives them fairly good support. I'll probly rig up some way of supporting them better though.

Looking good, This is what I need to do for my turbo timer and boost gauge. I don't like passing cops with a gauge in the pillar, some of that unwanted attention.
