Can someone tell me what this is? (PICS)

After swapping in a new head gasket, I spotted something I've never noticed before. It sits just below the throttle body and under the ISC motor on a 1G intake manifold. It looks like some type of valve of sorts, and it has two vacuum lines running into it. I totally forgot to label which ones go to which end, (there is a green one, and the other line Im not sure about the color). Does anyone have any clue as to what this thing is, and what fuction does it perform? Here are the pics:

What does this EGR valve do, and does it appear that I have it hooked it properly? I have the green line running into the rear (the rear tube facing the firewall). Should it be the other way around?? What would happen if I switched the two lines by accident? Thanks.

its for smog..
i would recommend getting the book (chiltons) or whatever and looking at the vaccum hose diamgram.. it tells u the colors and all that..

i thought it was a California only law to have the egr connected. Im rite now looking for the solenoid that connects to the valve, they wont smogg it without it.

Most people block the EGR valve off and reroute the vacuum lines (like in Taboo's diagram), in most states you will pass without it (cali is strict tho). Believe it or not, your hydrocarbon level will go down, but the nitrogen level will go up (a lot of states don't test for nitrogen because it requires special expensive equipment). All the valve does is recirculate some exhaust gases back into the intake to lower nitrogen emissions.
