how did you prepare it for painting?
where did you get that red engine dress up??

i did basically the same as Super, but i didnt use rubbing alcohol...

i steel-wooled it first, then cleaned it with GUNK, then steel-wooled it again.

got some 500* primer, 500* paint and painted it. then i got 1200* clear coat and did a few layers of that, just to make sure nothing was gonna come off. :)

its been good for 2 months now.

he probably did what my friend did. paint it all like normal. then take a razor or buffer and polish the paint back off of them.

i painted my VC blue, and the letters white.

painted the whole thing blue, then took the white spray paint and sprayed some of it in a small bowl, took a paint brush and painted them. it was actually pretty easy, and i SUCK at artsy stuff. :thumb:

You can also take something like lotion or vaseline and lightly rub over the letters so the paint doesnt stick to them. I am getting ready to paint mine. I will post some pics when finished.:thumb:

I did mine as well.

It took a few hours, but not too bad.

I cleaned mine with some aircraft cleaner stuff that I got from a parts store. It stripped the paint off well. I did that twice, and then a bit of sanding in the nasty parts. I then filed down the bad casting marks and some more fine sanding.

Then I cleaned the inside and passages with brake cleaner and MCCC. Then I put it in the dishwasher. Twice.

3 coats of VHT red. with sanding inbetween each coat. Very lightly with 2000 grit, and cleaning with glass cleaner and lint free cloth.

Then I baked it in the oven at 400 for 1 hr to cure the paint. Oh before you bake it, let it normally dry for half hour or so. And have plenty of windows open. Even with how anal I was about cleaning it, there was still plenty of nasty fumes.

To get the letters silver, I used a flat block and some 600grit, followed by some 2000 again. Both were wetsandings. Clean it up. Spray some high heat clear into the lid and with a small brush, apply it to the letters carefully.

I think it turned out very well, and have recieved lots of compliments on it. Dieselboy has seen it at the Portland Meet, and so have some of the BC people.

heres a pic, I use it for wallpaper too :) http://www.dsmtuners.com/gallery/showphoto.php?photo=10690&password=&sort=2&thecat=500

I took my VC over to one of my friends' shops and cleaned it in their parts cleaning tank then air dryed it. I bought some heat resistant engine paint from Wal*Mart (it was at midnight) along with some clear engine paint too. Painted SEVERAL light layers of red on it then cleared it. Also got some black grill paint and sponged the letters black then re-cleared the whole thing. Turned out great, but I'm thinking of sandblasting the whole thing at my other buddy's shop and then having him powdercoat it. I've had the paint on since valentine's day and it hasn't chipped or melted at all, still glossy and everything.
