Crankwalk cure Evo1-4 or 1st or 2nd Gen DSM

The dreaded crankwalk happens to us all eventually so heres how to stop it.
This is not a guarentee'd 100% cure but in the many engines i have built non have returned with 'walk' i will let you decide!

First off lets assume the sump is off (its not a bolt by bolt description) and the bearing carrier, the center main bearing is the cause for concern, Evo1-4 share the same center main which has integral thrust bearings upon it, this means that instead of the thrust washer/bearing being a seperate item they are one piece with the main bearing, nothing to worry about as lots of engines have this same design, however from what ive seen of other engines they do tend to point the returning engine oil straight to the center thrust face which Evo's do not!
This i believe is where the problem lies, oil starvation to the thrust washers! if the crank is still in the engine then you can carefully spin the upper bearing around the crank journel to remove/replace it, you should have the bearing carrier off and in front of you, this need to be modified in the following way, file a channel from the center oil gallery out towards the clutch side of the engine, thus creating a new oil passageway:see pic

Once you have done that and are happy that the amount of material you have removed will allow a fair amount of oil through it then you need to modify the center main bearing in the same manner to allow oil to pass directly to the thrust face of the crank, a small notch taken out either side of the bearing will sufice, again to allow enough oil to pass, don't worry about oil pressure you should have loads to spare and its not as if its free to spill out everywhere the crank will see to that.

Once you have done all that replace the bearing in the upper part of the engine by lining up the crank and spinning the new one in just the opposite of getting it out! then replace the bearing cradle thats been modified along with the new modified bearing, you should now have a new oil passageway directing oil from the center main straight onto the thrust face of the crankshaft

Re-torque the carrier bolts and replace the sump and anything else you have had to remove during the process, make sure theres oil put back in, take out the plugs before turning the engine over!(important) turn the motor over a few times until the oil pressure light has gone out, replace plugs and fire it up! that should cure all your ill's

Thrust bearing failure has only so many causes: Insufficient oil, lower end misalignment, inadequate bearing surface, insufficient crank hardness. Given that 2Gb and later EVO motors have revised bearings that don't fail at a high statistical rate gives us a clue.

Overbore has a modified thrust bearing, block machining, and crank hardening treatment that they say gives them near-100% reliability. What's it involve? Sufficient oil across a larger surface combined with a harder crank and exacting lower end machining and alignment.

Seems to me anything that grants those features should result in a substantially higher degree of success.
