Washington,
Well, I picked up a brand spanking new ebay evo3/16g turbo setup from a local here for $125 bucks the other day. But I also have a real one en route that I got for a good price. What do you guys think I should do here? You want comparison pics of the turbos side by side, comparison vids? Do you want me to install the ebay one and see how long it runs and how well it runs, then if it blows to install the real MHI Evo3? Throw me some ideas. I'll try to entertain them.

ADDITION TO THE THREAD:

With all due respect here. I think a lot of people on both sides are being HEAVILY MISLEAD by others. The MHI turbo with the install kit will in NO WAY cost you only $75 more then the ebay setup. Where is everyone getting their numbers from? The ebay turbos with the install kit and an ebay j pipe will cost you under $300. The MHI turbo's with the same wil cost you $700+

Guys please get your numbers straight here. I am not a cheapskate or a poor starving college student. If you look at the pictures- I have a relatively new MHI turbo in the pictures right next to the ebay turbo and both are mine. I'm not doing this to save a couple of bucks but to prove a theory we have.

One warning I will put in caps here for those who may buy an ebay turbo and ebay install kit.

90% OF THE BOLTS, STUDS, ETC ON THE EBAY TURBO INSTALL KITS ARE THE INCORRECT SIZE. BE EXTREMELY CAREFUL WHEN USING EBAY INSTALL KITS. IF IT DOESNT' THREAD IN HALFWAY WITH YOUR FINGERS- IT IS THE WRONG SIZE, HEED MY WARNING

This would be mighty cool. I say do the Ebay one first. Log things like when full boost is reached, the sound of it (different turbos make different sounds), and then beat on it when you can and log how long it lasts or what starts to go wrong with it.

Then do the MHI turbo and log full boost and sound. (Don't want to destroy this turbo too soon)

Pics, Vids and a write up would be the best possible comparison ever. Looking forward to updates.

Sure- I have considered this and may do this because of the following (and please excuse the cut and past because I have this posted at talk as well).

Here is the thing that I have been doubting. I know there are hundreds of those ebay kits if not thousands sold. Searching thru the forums I only see about 4 or 5 horror stories. Many of them posted by installers or shops that have an interest in selling customers the more expensive turbos. I am wondering if this could be attributed to bad turbo's, bad installs, or bullshit. I know that supra and nissan guys run those ebay turbo's for years at extremely high boost and have absolutely no issues. I know they are not as good as the MHI's- but are they really so shitty as to get the rep this board gives them?

Most of the people on here that bash ebay turbos are just mad because they bought the real thing for like 3 times the price. Most everyone you talk to that have an ebay turbo is pleased but even with MHI there are still some bad apples. You have to realize that every company starts somewhere. Just because they started on ebay to gain customers does not mean there shit is crap.

I have seen a few threads talking about them and how long they are lasting for some. It's obviously not the same exact castings that MHI uses, but still enough that it an be called an Evo3 turbo. But you have to remember this. We own DSMs LOL. Things break (often for most) so one would be obliged to post on these forums about a bad experience. For me, the only thing I really question about these "GT" turbos is the wastegate assembly and how well it was designed.

i would not trust ebay kits.

and for sure defenitally install the real MHI Evo3

actually the only thing i would stay away from on ebay is cheap chineese headers

Hey im not to far from you.......would you sell the ebay evo 3 turbo? i have one on my galant and LOVE IT!

My mechanic just picked up another vr4 with a blown turbo
let me know
thanks

Hi,

No- i got it for $125, i'm using it for this experiment. I'm tired of the naysayers.

I think that if your goin to do this, do it right! make it a ligit testing, at the ground level where it counts. Log everything you possible can. Dyno if you can afford it, on both turbos. 1/4 mile runs. Run a lower oil psi(from the head) and a high oil psi(from the OFH). Anything and everything that can happen to them, do it to them. We all know how good the MHI Evo3 is, lets see if the ebay turbo can hang. Then, when its all said and done, write the best write up you can posting all the info from both turbos. Just my .02!

P.S. I have a real MHI Evo3 and its a great turbo!

I have both turbos side by side right in front of me. Honestly from the outside- the ebay turbo looks much better as far as quality goes. internals- I have no idea.

I have taken both turbos apart, and when you compare the turbo internals side by side, everything is slightly different.

+1 for a side-by-side, all out, torture test comparison!! I'd email a couple of the ebay sellers that sell those things to see if they finance a portion of your testing. I doubt they'll go for it, but it's worth a shot. Hell, you might even ask some of the site sponsors if they'll finance some of the testing. You would think that with how "crappy" these turbos are, that they jump at the chance to de-bunk these turbo's once and for all.

If nothing else... call Mythbusters and see if they'll help you out. :)

GREAT idea.:thumb:

how are they different on the inside? Pics?

I took a real MHI turbo apart which had a good center section, and I tried to install the ebay compressor/turbine wheel. It wasnt possible. The diameter of the shaft was different, and the ebay 16G had a slightly longer shaft.

I am running an Ebay Big 16G, so far about 500 miles now and zero problems. I am running stock boost because I am breaking in a new engine.

Seeing as to how you'll be helping me with the install. I'll go with the ebay turbo..this weekend work for you?

I will certainly be punishing my ebay turbo... As soon as the motor is broken in, I will be raising the boost up to around 20-22 psi.
