Blown 14b turbo and wheel rips through exhaust housing (pics)

I had something like that happen to me on a half dead/soon to be track car. My buddy and I were giving the car a good work out when suddenly the boost was gone. We limped the car back to my house to inspect what happened, and found that the turbo exploded. It wasn't funny until I took a look down the down pipe and found the turbine wheel.

haha yea something tell me that turbo parts don't belong in you down pipe and catalytic, its just a hunch... and on that note when you do replace your turbo you may wanna take your down pipe and cat off and give them a good shaking out...

I was on the highway and I went to get on it and pretty much as soon as i punched it, I heard a lound ping and felt like a mini fuel cut. Then the biggest black smoke cloud Id ever seen from a car was behind me. Cars were not happy behind me. My cat probably saved the cars behind me from collecting blade particles.LOL.

Hpw does your exhaust manifold look? The reason I am asking is because one of two things. 1 Did any of the turbine blades brake off and go shooting toward the head? and 2. Did a valve or two happen to attempt some tap dancing and loose a step or two and come flying into the turbine housing?

How the turbine wheel would just sheer of like that. In order for something to happen(from my knowlegde) a valve would have to come loose (or some other foreign debris) and hit the wheel at a high enough speed causing it to lock and sheer instantly. For number one, the turbine wheel and housing could have gotten so hot that they had no play between the two and caused it to lock and sheer. Those are the only two that make sense to me unless the turbine shaft had been overheated to the point that it would cool down and form cracks and eventually have some stress applied to the turbine wheel causing it to come of and continue to spin around projecting blades in all different directions.

I want to see if you would be able to get some pictures of the turbo shaft along with the rest of the turbo guts and also see what kind of damage may have occured to the cylinder head.

Thanks for posting this up.

All this carnage is on the Exhaust Side - You'd have to see the Compressor side to answer your questions but my guess is he's fine - I'm just waiting for some guy to come on here & say - HEY DUDE, I think you can SAVE IT~!

Yeah, I know what you mean. Just give it a while and you'll see. "yah, just put a new turbine wheel from a larger turbo on there and port the part that got tore up and its and upgraded turbo already!". I know some people may actually believe that. For the people that don't know, that phrase was a joke.

MY GOD!!! That was with a stainless Bullseye housing on it. I wonder how much more would have got chewed up if it was a iron housing...

COOL pics!

Man that turbo is something I would hang on the wall in my garage. It would make me laugh everytime I looked at it. ROFL

Heres a couple more pics i had of the housing, where the fins snapped off and the .

The housing or blades melted and ended up in that crevice inside there.

The blades in the last pic where stuck on that cracked cap that we had to pry off which where shown in the last pic on my first post.

I think you can still rebuild that turbo. LOL. jk. Let me know if you need a hand installing the new one.

i had the samething happen to be on a 14b turbo on my 2g. never did figure out exactly why it happen had the hunch that maybe a fuel cut was the cause.. but i have no idea. i ran a 3" dp and 3" exhaust w/ no cat heh needless to say when my wheel shot out the exhaust it was in someones bumper more than likely.

man that would be a funny picture to take. but the person would have been pissed heh.

damn. At least thats all that happened, you got lucky on that one. Stow, its nice to see a familiar place on here, I use to live in Streetsboro before I got smart and moved to FL. What turbo are you gonna upgrade to now?

Wow, I have NEVER seen that in the 9 yrs. of being a DSMer.

I have. Kevin Jewer was at the track one day and spat a turbine wheel (oddly enough, off a 14b turbo!) through his exhaust onto the track surface. It sheared off his O2 sensor completely. Cool stuff.
