So it's stuck in 3rd gear?

yeah man, thats what it seems like, and you know what? i think the linkage by the tranny is missing somethin.. its called a cotter pin i think. would you help me if i uploaded a pic real quick?

i took off the rear trans cover (thanks haynes manual) and when i took it off, this brass looking ring was dangling outside the gear (presumably 3rd gear). Here are my pictures. What is it, how do i put it back in? I know this is obviously my problem as when i go to shift, the shift fork doesnt have any friction keeping it in place to move it (this ring). Professional and very knowledgable experience needed please. I'll give links to the pictures as there is too many and dsmtuners.com doesn't have enough space.

That's the 5th gear syncro ring, not 3rd gear.

oh crud. how do i put that back on? i heard its easy but i dont know how.

it helps a bit... when i get it on like that, i can still pull it off, i put it on to where the notches fit, and then what?

It is supposed to be "floating" there on the end of the 5th gear gearset, on the outside of the 5th gear hub and slider. On the other side of the hub and slider (between transmission plate and the gear), you will see another brass synchro--it is the other synchro on the gear--which is how it is supposed to look.

Take a dab of moly grease or synthetic grease, and lube up the back of the synchro ring so that it will hold on the end of the 5th gear. Be sure you have it aligned properly so that it fits in its proper orientation.

Then undo whatever else you did to your 5th gear end housing (if you took off the Viscous coupler, or the 34mm end nuts, etc. Then bolt on the 5th gear cover (using permatex ultra gray RTV), and install the bolts. Now, before you go and drive it or do anything else, figure out if you are going to remove the transmission (before refilling it).

Now....
The first thing you should do, is revise your first post in complete and punctuated sentences so that we can better understand exactly what is happening. It only takes a little time, and it makes more people want to help you. (I am not meaning to be an ass, but it DOES make things easier to fix if we can understand you).

Ok -- first off -- Exactly how HARD to you shift? There is no need-- you are putting alot more wear on the synchros, gears, shift forks, etc. when you beat the crap out of the tranny.

Now...once you have done like I asked above (replace the tranny 5th gear end cover), we can go back to the beginning of trouble shooting the problem.

You should now go and look to see what the condition of the shift linkage is -- this is NOT inside of the transmission. It is on the OUTSIDE of the transmission, and is in the form of two black vinyl covered metal cables running from the shifter, through the firewall, to the top of the transmission, and is attached approximately below the stock blow off valve location on the transmission (below and to the left of the water neck on the cylinder head).
The shift linkage cables should be attached to the transmission using a rubber bushing, a washer, and a cotter pin to the linkage on the transmission. There are two mounting points on the transmission--the cables should both be attached. Next, inspect to see if the two retaining pins are holding the shift cables into the shift cable bracket that is bolted to the transmission (they look like two metal blades that retain the cables in the bracket). If those cables are attached properly, we now go back into the car to do a little more troubleshooting.

Now, with the vehicle OFF -- push the clutch down, and shift from neutral to 1st, then 2nd, then 3rd, then 4th, then 5th, then reverse. Then do the same with the car still OFF, with the clutch pedal up, shifting 1st through 5th and reverse. It is supposed to go throughout every gear easily with the clutch pedal up or down. Be sure that you have your parking brake ON, or your foot on the brake for safety. If you are going to do this, I also reccomend that you have the vehicle on the ground, not on jack stands, or in the air -- it is a safety risk.

Now, if you try to shift and it is ONLY going into 3rd or 4th, and not finding ANY other gear, you have either broken a shift fork, a hub and slider assembly, or another gear face.

When you say that it wouldn't get out of 3rd gear, it makes me think that you more than likely shattered the 3/4 hub and slider and/or a 3/4 shift fork.


These items are something a professional mechanic should replace, because it means that you need to have your transmission rebuilt.
