I've had my car for almost exactly 2 years now (9 days until) and I really haven't had any problems with it at all. I road race it, ran a mid 12 at the 1/4 and it still had more in it, drive it to school, and even deliver Italian food for a local restaurant in it. I bought it with 59k on the clock and it just hit 90k today. When I bought it 2 years ago, I took it to get the timing belt done immediately at a place my dad suggested. I didn't know better at the time, if I could do it over again I would have taken it to one of the DSM mechanics around this area. I thought he replaced the balance shaft belt as well, but I guess not.

I was doing a delivery tonight and when I arrived at their house, I noticed the car felt like it was vibrating a little more than normal, as if the exhaust was bolted directly to the chassis or something, the car would vibrate with the RPM. I didn't think much of it but I popped the hood and couldnt see anything unusual. I drove off with it still vibrating and figured I'd drive it the few miles home and check it out there. As I drove off I noticed the car was hesitating when it got to about 3k RPM, and then got worse. It started stuttering and bucking a little, and really didn't want to boost or accelerate. I did a U turn and drove to a good place to pull over, and before I pulled over it had already died. I coasted it and parked it along the street. It's dark, cold, and windy and I didn't have any tools with me, not even a screwdriver. There was a CEL and DSMlink said it was "Crankshaft Position Sensor Malnfunction". Great... It refused to start, didn't even try to catch.

I had it towed home and a few DSM friends came over, one who's been through just about everything with his car. We pulled the timing covers off and checked the timing. We aligned the cam gear marks and looked at the crank pulley. There's a T mark and a 10 mark below where it says BTDC. I don't know much about this stuff, I'm more of a bolt on and suspension guy, but I'm pretty sure the mark on the pulley is supposed to be aligned with the T, but instead it was over past the 10, I'm guessing around 14-15 or so based on where it was. Can't be good..

I'm assuming the BS belt snapped and took out the CPS and the timing belt...I'm also assuming the valves are bent and the pistons probably aren't too happy either but I don't know.

Here's the lesson. I was one of those guys who always read these countless posts on DSMtuners about crankwalk, bent valves, blown motors/trannies, etc, and thought to myself, "eh, that'll never happen to me." The car's in tip-top shape, well taken care of, runs perfect, never had any problem. Next thing I know the car's on a flatbed.

Here's the killer: Tomorrow is the dyno day. I've been looking forward to this day for about 2 months now, and I'm even supposed to lead the canyon cruise to the dyno...great time for this to happen. The sight of seeing my car getting lifted onto the tow truck was surreal, in fact this whole night was. I still can't believe this happened. It's so much that it hasn't even really registered yet. I was planning on buying a 1g n/t to use as a daily beater anyway, now might be a good time and drive that until I get the GSX finished.

how can you assume that? either it snapped or it didn't....

thats pretty shitty. i was planin on goin out there to dyno but i havent tuned my car yet. i just barley got my fuel trims dialed in the dsmlink. Its a fuccin award when my car works with no problems for more than a month for me.

I find myself wondering more and more if this trip will be the last one. It's one thing to drive a car carrying a live grenade. It's another when the factory pulled the pin.

Greatest commiseration with your fortune. Don't weaken.

Not to get off topic, but what does that mean? You'll be ditching the car?!?!

Back on topic. Sorry to hear about that, but I agree, it's a perfectly good time to upgrade!! You'll get through this and be a better man for it.

Sorry to hear about the bro. I was hoping to see you at IDRC next weekend. There is always something good about everything that happens. Look at it like this. At least it happened near your house and not at the dyno because thats a lot farther away from where you live and it would cost a arm and a leg to tow unless you have AAA's 100 mile tow service.

I was going to go to dyno day but I just picked up a GVR4 and now money is tight. I have to come up with Rent, the $700 I owe on the GVR4, my car payment, my cell payment and then fee to get into IDRC in 3 paychecks so... I am arsed out.

Yep..
IT started with crankwalk for me... then clutch.. then slave and master cylinders... and god knows how much more stuff...

Until 2 nights ago when it got totalled.

Time for an Upgrade i assume, Built 6 Bolt maybe?
Good Luck to you.

Hi, my name is honda civic. You'll never have a problem with me.

Ah memories, I remember when you first got your car and I saw you at a meet in Anahiem.

The car was all stock, right down to the T-25.

Fresh meat, I thought to myself.

I did the same thing as you, read the forms and started doing or fixing all the things that go wrong with dsms. Fact is that youll never get them all.

When i found out I had a 7bolt bottom end in my car I found a 6 bolt and rebuilt it with forged pistions, pulled out the balance shafts, put in Prothan motor mounts and new struts to protect my transfer case.

I did it all, caps in my ECU, new tstat, and knock sensor and 3G lifters. But saddly I missed the Ignition coil, and the day before Mod 06 the turd shorted out on my way home from work! and I missed the show, I was so pissed! by Hey that is what I call the life of Hot rodding! or tunning for you younger sprouts.

Its sad when you have to have a "next broken DSM part" buget, but thats life in the fast lane:thumb:

"60% of the time, it works half the time."

I'm so putting that on the hatch window of my GSX.

I feel your pain, I pulled my head today to replace what was thought to be a blown headgasket, only to find the grim aftermath of severe overboosting [previous owner] and detonation. My cylinder walls are scoured, and piston #2 is missing a good portion of the crown. Within a matter of seconds, the car was transformed into a winter project, instead of being driven to work tomorrow.

Good things will come of it, I guarantee it. You're not a true DSMer until you can say "Yeah, so this happened, and I did this to it, and this and this and this, and now it's a beast."

Now, you're getting me worried. I'm doing a headswap soon and am looking forward to seeing what my cylinder walls look like. :|

To eclipsegsx1736:

Keep your chin up. Your car is pretty sweet. Dont be the typical DSMer, do it right the first time. I'm sure you probably will.
