5v power source needed in 2g

Guys help me out here, i need a safe 5v power supple for a project.

Anyhelp would be appreciated, thought the rear o2 used 5v but no such luck.

MDP sensor, MAF sensor, TPS and ECU pin 81 (Green/Yellow)..
What kind of little project have you got going on their?

So pin 81 is the only 'in car' source right?

Other than the computers and sensors nothing else in the car uses 5v.
Pin 81 is the 5V power source for the sensors.

And I'd be wary of tapping that source. My method would be to get a stepdown supply from Radio Shack (which I'd find on eBay), remove its guts, provide a housing and wire-up someplace hidden.
Baling wire, probably.
How much of a device are you planning on powering?

Its a very small temperature converter, dont ask why. When its finished i will post pics and instructions. Its a small part of a much larger project.

Currently im not running any emissions sensors besides the front o2, would this make tapping pin 81 less of an issue?

The simple solution is to use a IC linear voltage regulator like a 7805 with input and output caps and run it from one of the switched 12v voltage sources in the car. With a heatsink you can pull upto 1A from it.

02 sensors create there own voltage from about 0-1v. Same thing with knock sensors. There is no reference going to them. Things such as TPS, MPD sensors have a 5v reference supplied by the ECU

With so many electronic devices around that connect to USB ports, 5v adapters are very common. My wife used to work for Hertz and for a while brought home about one cell phone charger and a hands free device every day. When we filled a box of them, she stopped and just threw them away. A while back, I was looking for 5v to connect to my pocket pc. I tested many of them and found that 5-6v was the most common. Actually I found one that connected directly to my pocket pc without hacking it.

That reminds me, at circuit city where i install car stereos we have probably 30 or 40 extra 12 v to 5v cigarette lighter plugs for our xm satelite radios that we install. If you go to any car stereo shop they should be able to sell you one or if you are more patient then just PM your info and ill send you one.
