Well just like it says, The car has jumped timing. I just bought it, and the guy who sold it said it jumped, but not enough to hurt anything. I think that it could be do to a bad auto tensioner, but I have another so im not worried about it. Today I took off the valve cover and the timing cover and turned the engine over using the bolt in the crank. It stopped, and I wasn't able to turn it over anymore once the cylinder 4 piston was up and the exhaust valves were down. I hope that the valves aren't bent, they do come back up so i dont think they are. I ran out of daylight today, but when i looked at the crank with the cover off, i noticed that the balance shaft belt was completely wasted. What other problems could have happened if the motor was run with a broken balance shaft belt? Tomorrow I'll line up all of the timing marks, replace the timing belt, and replace the auto tensioner. If the engine still wont turn over freely, then I'll pull the head off and check the valves and the bottom of the head to see what kinda shape its in. What else should I worry about and check? thanks.

Oh and one more thing, when the hell can I start posting in the regular forum? This whole noobie forum is really annoying for people who actually know cars, know the parts and the workings of their motors, and need help but cant find it since a lot of people dont read these noobie forums.

Well, first thing I would do is put a new belt on it like nothing happened. Then I would do a compression check to make sure everything is ok. It's very rare, but it does happen

If it is good to go, then you can start looking at what caused it in the first place. Most likely a bad or improperly adjusted autotensioner.

Either one can cause this. Go to VFAQ.com and download or print out the exact way to do the timing belt. If you can, use the "right" tools. I have never tried the layman tools but I would think if it works then who am I to belittle it.

I usually find that balance shaft belts go when you have a balance shaft going bad and putting undue stress on the belt. Use a balance shaft eliminator kit and that should fix that.

Once you get it all back together, spin the engine 6 revolutions to line things back up again. If it comes up right and you have compression and no balance shafts, etc etc etc, you probably are going to enjoy a good driving car.

Do it sloppily and you will be posting in here again. These engines do not allow for carelessness. Just ask anyone.

As far as posting. Look in the rules at the front page and that will give you the criteria for posting.

I went throught the same thing a year ago and I've been a Mitsubishi technician since around 1991.

You will be fine. Just help others with their situations and don't post information if you don't know the answer and you will be fine.

Good Luck and see you in the forums.

Yeah, Old Mitsu and I spend most of our time in this forum actually. We'll always be around for those fun questions.
Keep in mind though that these motors are interference engines. If the timing jumps, it usually dings up some valves.
If this car were mine, I would take the head off and have someone check it out for me just in case. I'd be pissed if I put it back together just so I could take it apart again.

i have had a couple of cars i had just bought jump timing but luckily the valves were never bent i bet i just jinxed myself then LOL...... i am agreeing with you on the noobie forums too it sucks!!!

as for the broken balance shaft belt i have cut the belt off of every dsm i have owned with no ill effects yet. maybe a lil more vibration but i haven't noticed it

So it doesn't matter if i just run it without the balance shaft belt? Why would people get an eliminator kit then? will you lose any oil pressure? does the position of the shaft matter if you just leave the belt off? Thanks

Thanks for all of you guys replys, I didnt think that I would get so many hits on this topic. So if i just take the belt off, and leave the shaft in there will it hurt anything? I wont have to worry about losing oil pressure will I? Does it matter what position I should leave it in? Thanks again.

here is what i have heard happening if you just cut the bs belt and leave it at that.. in some instance's the rear balance shaft still spinning w/ the oil pump that it can wear unevenly and cause bearing failure ect..

honesly what i do is just leave the bs belt tensioner in there with some rtv on the bolt. leave the front bs shaft in with the sroket on but no belt. remove the rear bs and cut it just after it exit's the oil pump so taht there is no vibration.. and call it gravy.. granted my way is a little more work but. it has less chance of jackin up your engine.
