Ok lets all clarify some things here. Everyone tosses these two term around interchangeably. On cars other then 95-96 this is the CPS or Camshaft Position Sensor

The CAS is the Crankshaft Angle Sensor (sorry no picture) and these are two separate parts and opposite sides of the engine.

Am I understanding this correctly?

A rose by any other name. Is still a rose.

Just as some call the computer a cpu or central processing unit, or a pcm power train control module, or ecm electronic control module, or just computer.

You 'll get the hang of it. I use CAS when I describe.

Good Luck

CAS usually refers to 90 to 94 cam angle sensors. Most people prefer the 90 model because it has its own pigtail (Wires)connected.91 to 94 you'll need the connector and enough wire from the harness. The 94 model is supposed to have better pickup and is identified by its plastic side cover. The CPS came on 95 and later. However because it was often broken(they break easy)in 97 the design was changed and it was moved from behind the intake cam gear to the other end of the intake cam.Still does the samething though and still requires a crank sensor located at the front of the crank. This is the one that breaks when you have crankwalk. It depends who you talk to,some people call them different things. But they are 3 different things thats why they don't cost the same.

So for 97-99 is it called the CAS again or is it the CPS still? Also does this mean that if that sensor went it it may not be directly related to CW?

Well i just bought a 1G GSX and the guy says that it needs the Crankshaft positioning sensor re-installed (CPS).
so does he mean the CAS???
also would this be something that is hard to install?

PS: yes i know, super old thread revival, but that happens when n00bs use search LOL.

On a 1G it would mean the CAS. Assuming you have all the parts it shouldn't take more than 15 mins to reinstall it. Turn the engine over my hand until it's at TDC cylinder 1. Line up the timing markes on the CAS and install it into the back side of the intake cam. Adjust the CAS midway and finger tighten the bolts. Once you have the car running let it come up to temp and perform a final setting to 5* BTDC with the timing adjust terminal grounded.

Correct me if I'm wrong but I think there is actually two different sensors. A Cam angle sensor(CAS) and a Crankshaft position sensor on 2g's. I believe this because I know I had to hardwire my Crank position sensor into my cam angle sensor during my 6 bolt swap.

Cam angle and Cam position sensor are both used interchangeably though. The same as crank angle and crank position sensor.

Crank position sensors are pretty hard to replace since they are underneath the timing belt cover.

they are both present in a 2G but not a 1G correct?

I have a 6 bolt swapped into a 2g do you know what year cam angle sensor i have? Also whoever wired this before me used the o2 sensor harness and wired that to the cam angle sensor and then plugged it into the 02 sensor and the regular cam sensor plug just sits there now. I don't understand my car LOL The first pic is the new connector that comes from the cam sensor and the second pic is what it now plugs into and the third pic is the old cam sensor plug which now just sits there. Someone please help me.
