Okay, Ive been investigating a kind of howling noise under 7psi and about 2.5-3k rpms. Seems like it would have been compressor wheels rubbing the housing right? Or cracked vaccum hose, boost leak etc. Anyway, Havent done a boost leak check yet. This noise is only rockin out when I first start driving (warming the car up first to op temp). Well, Ive been hunting it but it hasnt really been too much of an issue, until today, Im boosting full on stock gauge, I can hear the spool, (no howl) and Im not pushing what I should. So at this point Im convinced my turbo is crapping out. So I come home, pull stuff off, and check for shaft play...none. Check blade damage, and for rubbing...none. Spins fine at idle...etc. Well, I get a good look and I see what looks like white deposits on the outside edges of the blades. Ive never seen this before. Then I think, maybe its scoring right? Hell, I dont know. The only thing Ive seen cause a white deposit (other than corrosion) is fluid in an extremely high temp condition, and Im running fine on temp, and this is the intake side (I live in western Wa.). Does anybody know what this is? Im going back outside with a beer and DSM'er attitude right now, I just wanted to post this before I lose daylight. Check the pic and let me know what you think.

Well, I grabbed a Coors and went back outside and the only intake side problem I could find was a good amount of oil accumulation on the inside of the intake pipe caused by years of having the valve cover hose still hooked up to the danged intake pipe. I'm not completely convinced that the problems I'm having are related to the deposits on the turbo. I'm almost positive they are separate problems, but Ive never seen white deposits on compressor blades, and from my search through the archives, few people have (my search turned up nothing relevant). This is a pretty wacky problem and I actually think I should have posted it on the turbo tech forum but if anyone is checking around, lemme know what you think. I don't really expect to get an answer soon, till i can get some opinions, I'm gonna investigate this howling crap. I hope somebody has seen this and is willing to share. I'm almost :barf: but since my turbo is mechanically fine, I'm not too worried. Anyways, share if you know whassup or have a theory. :talon:

Do you have an aftermarket boost gauge? What are you reading on full boost?
You shouldn't be boosting when your car isn't warmed up yet... The howling is more than likely the turbo scrapping the housing. As to the residue. Take your finger and clean off one of the blades, then hold your finger up to the light. If you see a metallic shine, then it's your housing being scraped away. It's not hitting the housing very badly, just barely enough to scrape a little away. Or I could be totally wrong.... :thumb:

Actually if you would have read the first post you'd see that it isnt rubbing the housing, and I dont even drive until the car is warmed up. The turbo is fine. Im just wondering if thats deposits or what, and if so from where? No gauge, stock turbo, stock gauge, and stock boost.

Oh yeah, and the residue doesnt come of. Im starting to think it was some kind of protective coating thats finally deciding to wear off, like teflon or something.

I read the first post. I also looked at the picture, and saw scrapes on the housing. Thus leading me to my conclusion. But like I said, I could be totally wrong.

Hell, I dont know what it is. Like I said, Im a little more confused by it than concerned really. I took a look frist hand and everything in the turbo looks peachy, I just wondered if anyone had seen it before, whatever though.
