i took the valve cover off and sanded it down and used a dremel on alot of it, now im using gloss black engine paint (500 F heat resistance) to paint the whole thing
then when its done drying i will be sanding down the letters so they are polished but the rest is black

has anyone done this before? i hope the paint doesnt chip or crack or anything....

Greathuskie,

What kind of paint are you using? Engine paint from a can?

You need to find out some more information - painting the outside of the valve cover with this is probably ok, the inside I am not sure.

Laquer paints, in general, are not compatible with engine oil. You could get little pieces of paint chips floating in your engine in short order! In addition, to get the paint to really stick well, you may need primer as backing. Just be aware.

Bottom line: if you can, don't paint the inside part.

I'd use the VHT 1200-1500 deg paints.. due to the head of the exhaust manifold. Spray several light coats w/ ample time for them to dry inbetween. Then when you're done.. bake it in the oven at 450 deg for 20-30 min. This will smooth out the paint & make it last much longer. Then after it cools... sand off the letters w/ a sanding sponge. I did this a few years back & it worked out great. Be careful not to overtighten the valve cover bolts when you go to install it... cuz I spent several hours on mine.. then cracked it while installing.

ive done this exact thing huskie, i painted over everything (not in spark plug holes or anything on the inside), instead of sandling it down, take akind of rough cloth to the DOHC 2000 and the 16 VALVE about a half hour after you paint it, it comes off like a sticker... thats what i did and it turned out pretty good, i used shucks auto supplys 500o engine paint...

this is the best pic i have of it

its pretty dirty in that pic, looks better when theres no oil smeared on it

make sure you paint the timing belt cover too, it will look really bad when you put the newly painted valve cover on with the stock timing belt cover
