It does look pretty sweet .. but come on .. weight reduction ..?? you wont notice it at all and im wondering how well it seals ..

Luke :dsm:

Combined with other weight savings and it would really help a lot.I still think I would rather have my sunroof though, but those are a good idea.

Shaves off about 50 pounds or so :)

nutty huh? and its top weight too, every little bit counts. IMO

my guess pretty easy to seal, you could silicone it or just rubber gasket like used on the doors of your car and then put the CF down.

It'd be really really cool if they could get it so the sunroof still works.

Invent it, I will be your first customer.

I'm guessing they could make a speedglass replament. You could also make it manual that should save quite a bit of the weight.

I dont know about you guys but if I was making an all out drag or race car that would be sweet. But I need something that has all the properties of glass, but is also many times lighter. Find me something....make me something...and I'll be a customer of that.

Hey Guys there were some good questions so I sent him an email and he got back to me already.

"
Rick, here are a few of my comments in response to the questions:

"It does look pretty sweet .. but come on .. weight reduction ..?? you wont

Weight reduction is not complete with one part although there is no other
single part on the car that you can remove and replace that can drop 50lbs.
At least I can't think of one. THis basically offers twice the benefit of
replacing your stock hood with a good cf hood. The reason being its weight
up high. Weight transfer is a killer in drag and autocross. The black
silicon comes with the kits as well as all custom hardware needed. I have
had customers take these through auto car washes with no problems.

"It'd be really really cool if they could get it so the sunroof still
works."

The motor and track system is what weighs the most, not the roof panel. If
you left those in you wouldn't be getting the same weight reduction for your
money. You could even make it a manual pop up but then we would have to
engineer a system to seal it over and over again...reliably! This would
mean a more costly kit. Hell there are a lot of aftermarket sunroofs that
don't seal very well. But its basically for the racers out there they want to drop
max weight.

"I'm guessing they could make a speedglass replament. You could also make it

Yes you could use lexan but here's the problem with that. Lexan scratches,
lexan gives your head a sunburn. Lexan doesn't come with a kit which is a
big deal to the fit and finish of the product. Lexan yellows over time, our
dry carbon fiber panel won't fade since we clear coat the top side with UV
resistant clear coat. Lexan warps when it heats up in the mid day sun. A
rippled panel doesn't look very hot and good luck sealing it. Carbon fiber
has a CTE (Coefficient of thermal expansion) of almost zero. It doesn't
change shape.

Overall we wanted to give maximum weight reduction and still maintain a nice
appearance. The panel weighs about 1 lb. This panel is glossy on both
sides because it is autoclave cured under super pressure and heat."

He pointed out some things I never thought about such as the CTE of some products. As well as lexan turning yellow over time and scratching. I was thinking about lexan replacement and getting a Carbon Fiber hatch. But its useless if its going to scratch easy or yellow! ick :barf:

i think it would be good for thoes people that like the no moon roof/roof scoop look no more custom work put on and mold in then paint :thumb: :thumb:

Used to work with a guy that had a roof scoop on his eclipse... never could figure out what the hell good it was doing up there... however, it would be really cool if you could put a roof scoop on, and have it actually route air into the car...

Ugh, that's nasty looking. If I was that serious about weight reduction I would just take the Brent Rau approach and cut the sunroof out and weld an non-'roofed top from an RS in.

50? Oh come on now... I just shipped a factory 1G roof and it weighed 18 with box and packing everything so I'll bet the sunroof was 15Max(with latch and seals).

I'm not saying its not an idea but the weight benefit isn't all that. Haha next you'll see peeps with no sunroof with them trying to act like they got sunroofs(I've seen some crazier stuff than that).

Does that include the motor and all the wiring? I would think the motor is the heaviest part... but even the miniscule weight gains add up when you're doing a lot of things...

I WANT IT NOW

email them

i need to get rid of this POS sunroof tht doesnt seal worth a shit and rattles insanely, it pisses me off

I hope this thing at least seals up, i would love to lose 50lb and get a more solid sounding car

The shell I am looking at buying is missing a sunroof. I was wondering if any companies out there sold a carbonfiber filler for the hole that way I could save some weight and not get rained on?

Any other suggestions would work, this is for use on a purpose built drag car.

exactly, I dont wanna see out of the spot and I wont want to use the sunroof, I just want it filled, cheaply and as light as possible. Can anyone fibricate a C/F one for cheap? OMG

I don't know. I just pulled the entire unit from my 2G and it feels every bit as heavy as 30 lbs. The hatch however, I just picked up and it feels like a good 60 lbs or so.

Considering how much the Mitsubishi engineers toiled and labored over getting a aluminum roof in the Evolution MR and RS for a mere fraction of the weight you guys are talking about, it will probably help quite a bit in making the car handle better/lowering its center of gravity.

I am looking to lose some weight outa my 2g. First of all I wanna get rid of my sunroof, does anyone make a plug or something so I can take my complete sunrood assembly out and cover it up? Something made of Carbon Fiber or whatever.
