I don't know all of the free mods but a lot depends on your cash flow. buying a turbo?/don't bother porting the 14b. those no brainers like that you can deceide. Fuel pump rewire, YES, look at how many have that mod listed!
Can't hack the mas without fuel control. remove the sound deadener, sure. you should get the idea. The best thing is to do searches and see what guys have done and replies/results. Mark

most of the free mods are good if you are on a budget (like me) ... but once you get into really building up your DSM... most of them will be replaced....

BCS mod = replaced with a Boost Controller
FP Rewire = replaced with an aftermarket Fuel Pump
etc...

Do your research on each one and you should be fine.

I removed the boost restrictor nipple 1st.
Didn't notice much of a change.The boost
gauge read 12lbs @ WOT max.

I hacked the dump tube 2nd.
Lost the cool whistle when letting off the gas.
Didn't notice any diff in power.

I ported the exhaust manifold inlets 3rd.
Still no difference.

Removed air box 4th
Replaced with cheap cone type filter and
3" adapter.Very cool sound now but car
felt slower than w/ the box on. Figured
engine heat was now getting to the filter.
Fabricated a heat shield to fold over for that.

5th came the manual boost controller set to 14 psi.
A little more power.Not much.

This was all done on a stock 2g 115k,T25
Knowing max is 250hp on stock AWD 2G
Max boost is around 15 on stock FP & BOV.
Replacing w/ hard 2.5 upper and 1G BOV tomorrow

umm.. why skip or do without any? Even if they add next to nothing, whats to lose, theyre FREE. people spend ungodly amounts on unecessary mods like bovs n things, yet others wonder if FREE mods are worth it? hmmm.

an easy way to up boost to 16 psi is to remove all vaccum hoses from the BCS, and insert the hose leading from the wastegate into the nipple leading into the intake filter can. before i did this, i was running 12 psi max, totally stock, now boost is up to about 16 psi.

Having tried a lot of them myself, I found that the most beneficial mod was the "Washer Spacer/Hood Vent" (add 4 thick washers behind the hood's hinges to space the hood slightly higher then stock. Then remove the OE weather stripping all along the top of the firewall to act like a cowl-induction hood). -This simple, yet almost free mod made a noticable difference in intake temps and allowed the engine bay to vent off a lot of otherwise trapped heat.
The down sides:
A few leaves in your engine bay, this time of year, anyways.
Fender lines don't line up 100%, but you can't hardly notice it.

your not going to get much of a gain out of the t25 anyways when it comes to the free mods. More noticeable on 1gs.

interesting! Cool air in and hot out has always been something to think about for me. there is a gy onthe starion/Conquest board who has been the free-mod king. might want to check out what he has done at least t see what some hard work butlittle cash can do. www.t-racing.com. Mark

I've heard of this washer mod as well ... but it looks really bad from the side when the hood is sticking up. Makes the car look cheap because to the average person it would appear to be a misaligned hood.

They are free, whats the question of worth?

so?.....normal people arent gonna think a 1g looks good regardless of the hood. once you explain it, they *might* get it.

just like someone at work today said spending money on a car is stupid. i told him how much i have spent on mine, he almost died and asked why. i told him he has obviously never rode in one before.

My favorite free mod on the 1G is the removal of the passenger side fog light and bracket. It doesn't hurt the way the car will run at all and it get's a lot more cool air to your intercooler.

...That would also depend on how thick of washers you used. -I used 1/8" thick washers on my Talon... Your can't even tell without running your fingers over it. -I doubt that anyone will give you any sh*t for that.

And to quote this:

-I actually do get some sh*t for that one, as now everyone tells me that I have a fog lamp out.

...Add to that the modification of the rear spash guard that protects the back side of the IC... I cut out all of the plastic air ducts and replaced that whole section with some heavy screen mesh for more throughput on the outlet side of the IC. Again, not exactly FREE, but less then a dollar's worth of screen at OSH.

While at OSH, you should do the 3" PVC Intake as well. -This wasn't exactly a FREE mod, as the total, with everything like the hose clamps and couplers, and all came to ~$30 bux.
But it was totally worth it performance-wise, compared to that of buying an intake for about 2-3 times the cost of the DIY PVC.

ya i have a homemmade pvc intake, it has a much smother flow path vs the stock intake tube.

my hood and washers mod...

the down side is, u need to be careful when u wash the car. Don't get too much water in there...but i never have one problem with water going in, usually just a little bit....and i didn't remove the weather stripping.

2.5" straight pipe exhaust with muffler

custum UIC LIC pipes

Supra BOV

Bov dump tube mod,

Cone air filer...


my BCS is still in place...

i'm boosting to 14-15 PSI already.... and it creeps to 17 if i get on the pedal too fast and hard, and i occasionally hit Fuel cut...

god knows what my boost will hit if i cancel the BCS...

p.s. I have a Euro spec.. so i have no EGR or any other environmental crap.. if that makes a diff

That mod is not useless even after you upgraded the f/p. Aftermarket pumps are ment to run on 14+ volts.
So unless you end up with a inline pump and run all new wires, its a worth while mod.

I very much agree with that. I plan on having upgraded wires with an aftermarket pump myself. I was just trying to show that a free mod that will get you a little bit of something ... boost, fuel, etc... will usually get replaced by an aftermarket purchase.
