HOOD BEFORE AND AFTER

Just so you know, spray paint has no uv protection like automotive paint does so expect that hood and the rest of that car to be badly sun faded and possibly peeling within a year.

I have also tried spray painting my hood/roof/front bumper with spray paints. Inevitably I did it the right way (with a compression gun and automotive paint), but I have to admit that I was definately satisfied for a while with my $25 spray paint job.

I really would like to view these pictures. You need to be a member of imagestation to view those pictures. You will get more responses if you post the pictures right on the post.

Sinner is right, there is no UV protection in Primer. I think that your problem will lie in the fact that rattle can paint isn't very durable. If you actually had your car painted by a shop with actual epoxy based sealers I don't think UV would be a huge problem. I mean look at the old time "Rat Rods" and "Retro Rods" of today, many of them are sporting the primer look, but they are using epoxy primers rather than spray cans. If you do your entire car with buzz bomb Your car will most likely end up like like the 90's dodge neons that had the flaking problem. This problem occured because of the crappy clear Dodge used allowed the UV rays to cause oxidation between the primer and base coat. This resulted in the paint peeling back and blowing off. Another problem with buzz bomb paint is that it is mostly either laquer or acrylic enamel. Laquer is very brittle and requires strong thinners, so adding a laquer paint over anything but laquer could cause wrinkeling. Acrylic enamel will oxidize over time, an example would be the older ford pickups. The best sealers/adhesion promoters are epoxy based and can only be sprayed via HVLP or conventional Syphpn feed guns.
If you grow to like the primer look your best bet is to check into satin finishes. These are most of the time single stage paints that have a flattner added to them to remove some of the gloss. They have the same UV protection as regular paint and the same surface. Satin finishes will hide any sort of blemishes also.
I understand that you are only looking for a temporary solution, but I just wanted to give you some of your alternatives when it comes to low gloss paint.

I used a Duplicolor import auto spray color followed by duplicolor auto spray clear coat, so I expect it to last a little while. here are the pics.

Car looks good, I'm basically doing the same thing on my beater but instead of doing flat black, I'm doing a flat blue. I was at Lowe's the other day and noticed that they have Satin Clear Coat and was thinking about buying some and spraying it on the car.
