Hi,

I would like to create this thread for everyone that is thinking or doing a 7 bolt 4G64 engine with the 4G63 head swap.

The questions is to list all the parts you needed to complete the swap. If possible with part #, price where to get it. And to list the extra steps we need to make to complete the swap.

PLEASE don't start picking on someones way he or she built their engine. Keep it with just the parts list or help with instructions. Leave to BS out, thanks.

I hope this will work out and stay civilized. Then we can create a guidance for everyone with the 4G64 in mind.

Thanks,

Sven

Sven,
You got a good idea with this thread... I've read some other 4g64 threads before i found this one, but none of them seem to deal with REAL Mitsu part numbers and/or experiences.

I'm considering this build up myself, but I'm having trouble just trying to find a decent head gasket for a 4g64 (2.4L SOHC 18G1EA) out of a 95 Mitsubishi Mighty Max. From what I've heard , the bore on it is 87mm in Diameter (an Cometic would work then), but what about the taller deck heighth of the 4g64? -Isn't that 10mm taller then the 4g63? -This also brings up the problem of needing different cams & a different timing belt? -I seem to remember another post about the cams & T Belt needing to be from a 94 Galant 2.4L DOHC... Then there's still the oil skirt squirter issue as well.

Any of you DSM WiseMen build up a 2.4L? -Can you shed any light on the matter?

Thanks

there's a thread like this on 4gcs. not sure how much of it translates over tho.

Im not sure why a parts list is needed, all your really changing is the piston diameter. Im currently running a 2.4 with 87.5mm bore. I ordered my pistons from Weisco without any issue. As some know im not even running a Mitsubishi piston because when i was building my motor, there wasn't an availablity of the 4g64 piston. Weisco, Ross..... all offer the piston now and can be picked up from most DSM performance specialist such as Magnus, turbo trix.....

As for the head gasket, Nippon Power is where i picked up my headgasket. $100 and its a multi-layer cometic. You can specify thickness and bore through them. I know there is other companies out there offering these headgaskets.

For the bearing, i went the Clevlite.... 4g63 bearings

Keep in mind this build only consist of the 4g64 block and 4g64 crank. Everything else you can just use as if you were building a 4g63.

Another issue is timing if using adjustable cam gears, but thats a whole other story which gets more in depth.

If using the Crower rods with the 4g64 you will need to notch the side of the inside of the block so it will allow a clearance for the rods to move. I have attached a picture to show the notch.

Hope this helps a little.

So Hybrid,

I see that you don't have any cams listed in your DSM's profile... Are you still using the OE 4g63 cams? -What T Belt did you run with it? Were you able to retain the OE designed TBelt Tensioner? I think that I understand this correctly, that you will need either adjustable cam gears, or an OE set of cam gears from a 94 2.4L Galant. -What and why did you choose the route(s) that you took with your 2.4 build up?
Thanks
:talon:

BTW, what's up with that black Trottle Body? -It looks BIG :D

Im surprised i dont have any cams listed, im currently using the HKS 272's intake and exhaust side. As for timing belt, i got it from the dealership, i dont believe in the overpriced kevlar belts. The came gears i wanted were the fidanza but at the time they were on a 4 month back order.... aka.... screw that, so they sent me some more expensive venom gears. Turns out they arent half bad, they have 5 bolts instead of fidanza's 4, which i find to be more of a security.

The reason for the build was because of crankwalk... 105K yippy :thumbdown

The TB on that engine is actually a stock 1g throttle body but im in the process of seeing what i can bore it out to without screwing anything up. Im thinking i can get 1-2 more mm out of it.

I have a 2.4L 7-bolt 4g64

4g64 parts: block, crank, t-belt, and cam gears, cometic copper HG for 4G64 w/ 4G63 head
all else 4g63.

it was exactly like a 4g63 build. with those exceptions

i have part numbers, but for all the 64 parts, i just told the mitsu parts dept, i had a 94 galant DOHC

hope that helps, and i can dig out recipts if anyone really needs the part numbers.

secondly, my 4g64 with wiseco/eagle and a built 2G head is for sale as a complete longblock
PM/email me if interested.

anyone have information on how the head is mated. i found a few sites but all didnt have in depth info. also would like to see the holes machines closed and a head gasket from a 63 layed on the deck of a 64. thanx

I'm gathering parts for this right now... Here's a good site with a lot of the part numbers you want like the 2.4 DOHC Galant timing belt and cam gears you'll need http://www.extremeevolutions.com/4G64_buildup.htm

You use the 2G 7 bolt rods and custom pistons to acomidate the larger bore and get the right compression. There's some issue with certain rods not clearing the block and the block needs machining but I don't know the specifics. It's in one of the 4G64 threads here on tuners.
Final Drive Performance in Iowa (no web site yet, sorry) has the Eagle rods and Wiseco pistons for $705 shipped. Pretty good deal if you ask me.

The pistons should come with the proper rings and you just use 2G rod and main bearings (NOT 6 BOLT BEARINGS, THEY'RE NOT THE SAME SIZE) ($100-$125 for both).

The regular 4g63 balance shaft removal kit can be used. $44 from Mach V http://www.machv.com/busracbalsha.html

Use 2G ARP head and main studs and some would recommend this kit from Mach V to reduce the chances of crank walk http://www.machv.com/conracmbcadk.html $49 insurence sounds good to me :)

I picked up some Force Performance FP2 cams and an ACT flywheel ( you just use the 2G flywheel and clutch for you FWD or AWD application).

Umm... use the 63 oil pan, oil filter housing, front cover, water pump, oil pump, all that good stuff. Like was stated above, you use mainly 4G63 stuff with the exception of the timing belt, cam gears, block, crank, custom pistons, and 87.5 bore head gasket. Pretty straight forward build up...

So which flows better the 4G63 DOHC head or the 4G64 Galant DOHC head? I am guessing the the 4G63 head is more designed for forced induction but it seems the 64 head may have better flow. Any ideas?

Anyone have any thoughts on the 4g64 block's lack of piston skirt oilers? -I've heard that some of the early 7 bolt 46g4s had the passages machined, and some didn't... If the passages are there, do you just tap the ends for the oilers? What might happen if they were not used at all? I thought that they were there to help reduce the heat of the pistons caused from forced induction.

On a side note, I had the pleasure of helping to replace a buddy's head gasket on his 95 2.4L SOHC 8 Valve Mighty Max P/U today... VERY interesting stuff!!!!! -I snaped some picks of the block with my old OE 4g63 head gasket next to it. VERY CLOSE!! (with exception to the bore diameters) I will attempt to upload & resize them.... If they don't work out, then PM me if you guys want to see the full 1600x1200.

Overall impression: This block's bores are DEEP!!!

Aside from being the bastard-child of Mitsu, this 95 SOHC has to be the wierdest Mitsu motor I've ever seen... Parts were all special order, and when they came in were all the wrong ones (gaskets, mostly). Looking at the piston heads, you would think that they were 3 valves per cylinder, but it was only 2... As seen in my previous post, I laid the old OD 4g64 SOHC'c head gasket over my old 4g63 head gasket... The compression rings are almost "D" shaped. -Yet spherical bores -WIERD!

More part numbers I dug up

DOHC Galant Cam sprokets: MD189399 and MD300439. list price about $30 each

Timing belt from the same: MD182292 list price $88

Engine overhall kit (including upgraded metal HG): MD974635 list: $231.36

And a picture of why the holes need to be filled on the block. The head doesn't even cover them! It's not an option to leave them alone.

Spydert,
That block that you are building isn't a 4g64, is it?

-Just curious as the '95 7 bolt 4g64 in my previous pics doesn't have that problem... That was my old 4g63 head gasket that I slapped over the 4g64 block, and it didn't have any coverage (or lack of) issues.

I still have 2 concerns:
*Oil Squirters for the piston skirts
*Hood clearance issues with the taller block.

...Any thoughts?

I can see those freeze plugs installed in the holes around the outside perimeter of the block's casting. That MUST be a different block, as the 95 4g64 doesn't have that same footprint (i.e. -Those holes don't exist on the '95 7 bolt 4g64 2.4L block). Where are the outer coolant passages then? Under the freeze plugs? Exactly what head gasket do you intend to use with this block?

BTW, Arn't those ARPs in backwards? Where's the allen heads? Those are 11mm diameter studs, right?

Why do people worry about the extra 6mm deck height and hood clearence? there is no issue there!

Has there been issues with exhaust clearance? My downpipe is already a little short to my O2 housing, so Im concerned that the extra height my complicate things more. Anyone know where I can get an exhaust manifold spacer (to the turbo)?

You could run one of these with double gaskets and longer studs.
I wouldn't think it would be a problem but if your already short then maybe.
