When do I add Lucas?

I just used this stuff for the first time this weekend on my 91 GSX. OMG what a difference better oil pressure, more power, and lifter noise is comptlely gone!!!!!!!!!! I mixed mine in right when i changed my oil first running a engine flush before draining!!!!!!! A must do!! Put 3.5 quarts of your regular oil MOBILE 1 and that whone bottle of LUCAS. GOOD LUCK HAVE FUN WITH YOUR DSM!!! :dsm: :thumb:

you can put it in before or after the oil, doesn't really matter much, but its a little better to put in after the oil because of the thickness. its helps to set it on top of the engine or something kinda warm so it pours easier. just replace one quart of lucas with one quart of oil, you can do more but you don't really need to. i met a guy once who just used lucas...no oil and didn't have any problems, but i wouldn't recomend doing that.

does the tick bother you guys that much ? I have had lifter tick since the day i got my talon , on the first engine and second.

The lucas test on BITOG.com is compelling, but bear in mind that it does not test the oil's performance in an engine. It also does not include information as to what percentage of Lucas was used in the tests. Lucas DOES make a heavy duty GEAR oil, which would likely yield very different results in the gear oil test, and I've heard that Lucas is likely going to be removing their recommendation for their Heavy Duty Oil Stabilizer as an additive for rear ends, transmissions, or anything else that uses interlocking gears requiring gear oil. In an ENGINE, Lucas works well, and is proven to do so. Better yet, Lucas makes a full synthetic oil stabilizer as well. They recommend a 20-25% mixture (basically a quart with an oil change) but since the synthetic oil stabilizer is twice the price at about $14 a bottle, I'm using a 10% mixture, and have done so in the past with the non-synthetic formulation with favorable results. Just something to chew on.

Oh, and I found a test on there where some guys went 18,000 miles on Mobil 1 in a camaro before oil analysis (every 1k) showed it needed to be changed. Good enough for me!

YES, its terrible, the tick is the only reason why my car sounds bad!

i just did the prescribed oil change method (flush engine, 3/4 mobil 1 synth and 1/4 lucas) and my engine ticking is WAY worse... by the way, is the lucas additive supposed to be so thick and sticky? mine was practically translucent glue.

Yes, Lucas is thick and slimy, but generally Lucas will not change the viscosity of the oil very much once mixed in. Maybe go from a 5W-30 to a 7W-33, but that's a big maybe.

A "quickie" engine flush is about the worst thing someone can do to an engine. It flushes the engine alright, but it can suspend almost all the contaminants at once and because of this can actually CAUSE blockages in oil passages. HLA's are reliant on a constant supply of fresh clean oil for proper operation, and if this is disturbed, then some major ticking can result.

You'd be much better off with a product like Auto-Rx. Again, check out www.bobistheoilguy.com forums and do so searches for more information.

Auto-Rx: http://www.auto-rx.com/index.html

I've been using Lucas in several different vehicles for a good while now, all of them utilizing hydraulic lash adjusters, and I haven't experienced Lucas causing any ill effects at all.

I'm not too impressed with the auto-rx webpage. For starters, on the home page, auto-rx states, "This extreme heat, when combined with engine oil also creates harmful by-products such as sludge, varnish and sulfur." But on the FAQ page, auto-rx states, "Varnish is nothing more than a cosmetic stain, it does not effect the performance of your engine." So which is it? A harmful by-product or merely a cosmetic stain?
I could be wrong, but it looks like snake oil to me.

I STARTED USING LUCAS ABOUT 5 YEARS AGO ON MY 180K MI ACCORD, THEN ON MY 145K MI LUDE WITH NO PROBLEMS WHAT SO EVER. I WOULD JUST ADD A FULL QUART OF LUCAS IN TO THE ENGINE BY FIRST ADDING 3.5 QUARTS OF 40W OIL, TURNING CAR ON FOR ABOUT 30 SEC THEN ADDING ADITIVE.
WHEN I TRIED IT ON MY 99K MI GST IT MADE IT SOUND LIKE CRAP UNTIL I STARTED USING 20-50W OIL AND JUST A HALF A QUART OF LUCAS.
I GUESS DIFFERENT ENGINES OR HIGHER MILES PLAY A ROLE IN HOW THIS PRODUCT REACTS.
NOW MY LIPSE SOUNDS REALLY QUIET WITH MINIMAL TICKING I'M A HAPPY CAMPER AND WOULD RECOMEND USING IT. :thumb:

You should try a couple drops on your damned capslock key.

I'm usually not a fan of engine additives (99% are useless, or even harmful in my opinion) but I like the Lucas. The long time lifter tick in my engine drove me crazy for years, but my current concoction of Lucas and Mobil 1 really seems to have quieted things down dramatically. The only drawback of adding Lucas appears to be that my engine uses a bit more oil between changes.

I have a little experience with lifter tick....
I had lifter tick just like you guys do...., and I also leaked oil, just as bad as
you guys.... I once heard DSM's don't leak oil, they mark their spot.....

This is what I did:
I was very skeptical at first about doing this entire job, that's why it took me
8k miles to build up the courage to tear my perfectly good running motor apart.
Before I started the process, I added a qt of CRC Engine Flush, idled it for
5mins and dumped the oil.

Then I tore the entire front of my engine off..... my wife was like, are going
to be able to put it back together.... I said hell yeah.... I live for this kinda
crap....
So this is what I did:
T-Belt job @ 70k all pulleys and new tensioner and a BSE....
I replaced the following gaskets and seals:
Oil Pump Seal
Crankshaft Seal
Plugged off BS hole
Front Case Gasket
Oil Filter Bracket Gasket
Oil Pan Adhesive
Valve Cover Gasket w/new Blue Powder Coated Valve Cover.... So Sick....
Stainless Steel Screws for $5 instead of Mach V's $35 plus shipping....
Spark Plug Gaskets
Half Moon
Cam Shaft Seals
Oil Return Tube Gasket
I think that's it, probably not though.....

Then get this, along with all of the parts I ordered online from Mentor Mitsu....
I ordered Mitsu Oil Filters.... These things would really help out guys with 3"
DP's, cuz this filter is larger in diameter, but shorter in height, yields more
clearance for larger downpipes.....

Then I added 3qts of Mobil 1 10w-30 not syn...... and 1qt of the Lucas Oil
Stabilizer for Synthetic or Non-Synthetic oils.... The label has a black
background and looks a little more appealing than the regular Lucas stuff.
This stuff was damn near as clear and as thin as water.
I've put about 1k hard summer miles on my car since all of that, and these are the results.

Absolutely no lifter tick what so ever....
Absolutely no oil leaks what so ever....
And my engine revs a lot faster now....

Sorry such a long post, but I had to share what I've done....

I saved my oil from my oil change in a clear glass container, and there were
no deposits or build ups of any kind and best yet, no metal....

I bet the combination of the Mitsu Oil Filters, and engine flush was the cure
all.....

I got 2 Mitsu filters for only $8.

Peace

I just went and bought some of this stuff in hopes to slow some oil consumption. I'm pretty sure my valve seals are shot, but I dont wanna rebuild the top end, I want a turbo awd to tear into :D . I was very surprised how thick this stuff is, like above, "translucent glue" is more like it! WOW. I did an oil change about 100 miles ago and today I was a half quart shy on the dip stick so I added in the lucas, wow that took a while to get through the funnel. I started the car up and let it idle for about 10 minutes and noticed my oil pressure was a tad high than normal, bonus! Hopefully I dont burn alot of oil on my way to St. Louis tomorrow, wish me luck :thumb:

Mike, my personal experience with Lucas is that it slightly INCREASES the amount of oil my engine uses. Be careful!

I was told by a few people (a few guys that work at the local oil change place, murrays and autozone guys, and my personal mechanic) that it's a bad idea to put additives into syntehtic oils........ That might be your problem

*shrugs* Either that or they don't know as much as I thought they did.....
