Today i got my new best 1/4 mile time on my 14b turbo. I ran 12.52 @ 110.6 with a poor 1.8 sixty foot on 110octane. Happy with its performance so far, going on Extremes' dyno in april. I love peoples reaction when they hear its still stock turbo. :talon:
Gooberlog-Thanks Phil B.

:thumb: Congrats on the solid 12 sec run.

That's what I like to see. Tuning a 14B that fast is cool and very respectable. I'm trying to get numbers like that this year, and join the ranks of the of the few that stuck with the 14B to see what she can do.

Car weighs about 2,820 pounds with a little over a quarter tank of gas. So yes i do have some weight reductions.
Thanks guys i appriciate the compliments, seems like everyone is fast to put on a big turbo. I don't plan on gettting too much faster out of it but i'd like to get a 12.3 out of it.

hey what things have you done to drop your weight to that level, thats and impressive weight

justin

Very decent.:thumb:
I was personally able to get my bone stock 14B (no porting whatsoever)with mild tune at 18psi to a 13.06 @ 103.83mph last year. There was alot more to do on that setup but that was the last run of the season.

New season, new things. Congratulations on the pass.:D If you dropped that 60 to about a 1.7 that should be a low 12 easily.

Well i picked up about 4mph and about 2.2 thenths. Since then i drove the car past 7k, with the new runs i was shifting at about 7300-7500rpms, and i have added mods such as 550's, afc, 2g maf, 3" intake, Supra SMIC and pipes, so really i was hoping for more, but there was room for error with a bad 1.82 60' time. My best was a 1.70. Thanks again.

The major things were: Front bumper support, passenger seat, spare, jack, tools, a/c "everything under the hood", cruise control, no padding on carpet, no sound detening material at ALL, no crap in truck except plastic interior panels and carpet, no fog lights, no bumper plastic etc. Thats the bulk of it. I'm still looking to take out much more weight, but i do want to keep the car looking almost orriginal inside and out. Think i will start looking for a maual steering rack soon. OMG Thanks, for the compliment but its not quite as light as Phil Beers 1g weighing in at about 2,820 WITH DRIVER! :thumb:

Yeah i'm going to try to improve my driving to match last years best 60' or atleast start cutting 1.7's. I orriginaly wanted mid to high 12's out of my car....well now that i'm here, i wanna run atleast 12.1-12.3 on the 14B and then maybe mid to hi 11's w/ another turbo. The only thing i've changed on the 14B was a 7cm turbine housing, other than that its a orriginal 149,400 mile 14b turbo.

Travis--no problem man.....it's awesome to see you about to go sub 12.5. That's wwhe you are really moving on the 14b. There are many 14b cars in the 12's, but still a handful or two below 12.5. Congrats and glad I could inspire you. For info:

with just over a 1/4 tank---car only---2575lbs.

---with me---2760 lbs.

I have more weight coming out very soon, about another 50-75lbs. In case anyone else hasn't heard......I will be running the 14b one final time on Friday May 21st at Lebanon Valley Dragway in New York. That will be it......at that point it will be 7.5 years that I have owned the Talon. If I can do it cool, if not, oh well. It will still be the quickest/fastest 14b/stock motor DSM. Not to mention, I ran 12.02 with stock injectors, intercooler, and pipes. So, it still has creed even if I don't go 11's. But, I am confident. Then, on to the next set-up:).

So, Travis, I'm sure you've got more left in it.....it's just how long you want to go at it....7.5 years is enough for me. And the only way I can justify keeping the car is too move to a new level. So, that is in process, I will almost double the cfm of the 14b....

Good luck Trav bangin out low 12's...

Phil1320

Phil have you added any mods since you ran 12.00000000001 or whatever it was ? Maybe you should just skip breakfast this time around :thumb:

Also what Turbo are you Planning on upgrading to?

Thanks again Phil, i really wanna get to the lower 12's with the 14b but i'm trying to justify how much weight i want to remove, i kinda like the interior in the car, but i'm looking at a lighweight seat for the track. Then there's always, hood, wheels, looking at Manual Steering.
With my stock bov crushed to open at 17 inches of vac. my turbo "when set to about 22psi" will go up to 22psi w/ no problem and then leak off to 18psi? Do you think that this is a vacum leak, bov still not holding boost, or is the 14B maxed out on the boost on the top end. Would a 2.5" exhaust have any effect on this. I think for my times to get much faster that i will have to be able to hold more than 18psi at the track. So far its working ok, but 22 feels much better than 18 on cam2. Thanks, PS, how much weight savings was your steering wheel? i think i remember seeing one at Altered that day?
Travis
What are the other 14B contenders other than Leon and yourself, i see i was 0.01 away from beating the fastest 14b 2g. Thanks for the info, is it me or does my car feel slow as hell unless its at the track.

....i meant boost leak , sorry.

CanadianTSi-- I have done no mods since the last time--I just have some boost leaks that I feel will help me regain some power when I fix them. That with a little more weight out and I think I might finally drive the car harder on the launch and the 1-2 shift. Hopefully enough to hit 11 seconds. We will see. As far as my next set-up, I'll just say it is a Forced Performance turbo..it's sitting in the basement right now with stainless O2, Tial 40mm and a Greddy Type R BOV. FMIC, injectors, GM MAF and MAF translator are on the way. I'm not messin around anymore......JIC coilovers are in the works as well. The cage should be in by the end of the year...gonna need it. I am also contemplating a fuel cell at this point, I run mostly race gas and it has contaminated my gas tank...in 80 miles it will clog the pickup on my fuel pump. SO, alot planned now that I'm keeping the car. EVERYONE has convinced me not to part with the car........so, for now, I'm goin nuts....also....still on my bone stock engine...no cams or anything...YET!!!!!! Let's see how far the stock engine will go.

Travis--it is possible you have a boost leak, mine is obvious as you can see the leaded fuel on the head above the exhaust manifold. Now, I'm hoping that fixing the leaks will give be better holding at 21-22psi, but, it just might be characteristics of the 14b...I hope not. If you saw the boost curve on my dyno sheet, it is pretty up and down..I only hit 21psi in the very beginning and drop as low as 18. We will see. Also, I am not tuning on a dynojet. I am tuning on what I think is the best dyno around---the Dynapacks. I have been on the Dynojets, and the Dyno Dynamics. The dynojets definitely don't give accurate Torque numbers. When I was down there in MD, we went to Altered...I ran 266HP...seems correct for that time...and 282 torque......up here on the packs with the 2.25" piping, 550's, and the AFC2, I made 285 HP and 271TQ......a more accurate account of torque. Best thing is the shop is 3 miles from my house........no more strip 20 miles away though!!!! 100 miles I drive.....and I didn't trailer when I went 12.009...I drove 100 miles up, busted 12.00 and drove 100 miles home blowing by all the Mustang homos at 150mph with their junk on the trailer.

hehe...those domestic lovers crack me up....

Trav..steering wheel might have saved 2-3 pounds....

I gotta run for now, but here is the list as I remember it, some are obviously not running 14b anymore.

The original 14b record holder when I started chasing it 6-7 years ago was Marc Hallman....12.57@109

...then that was beat by the late Jeff Carpenter, who started the original Forced Performance by the way, he was at [email protected]@110. I still have Jeff's original O2 dump mod on my car.....it gave me a solid .2 and 2mph in the 1/4 mile....I will never sell it and I dedicate everything I have done on the 14b to Jeff. I met him at the '98 shootout and he was impressed with the 12.8@106 that I ran that weekend with next to no mods at all. He was already around 12.4-5 or so. SO, that's some history..here's the list..all time:

Leon R. 11.84@113
Phil B. 12.00@113
Doug D. 12.17@113
Jeff C. 12.27@109
Jerry L. 12.30@110
Greg H. 12.40@110
Alex ? 12.46@109 2G
Jay H. 12.52@109 my buddy Jay Hass--3"turbo back, manual, filter and weight...that's it....Jay is my age and been driving a long time.
Then I guess you are in right here Trav...at your 12.52!
Fathouse 12.5@10X?

Also, that one guy just busted a [email protected] in a FWD 14b car from Florida..apparently stupid gutted...but, nonetheless a 14b car. Besides, I like gutted!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't think I forgot anyone...actually, I remember reading a post of some shop car claiming 12.1X@114, full weight......never heard anything back on that so it's not on the list, I tried to investigate, heard nothing...

Gotta go watch SPEED channel, check you later.....

...should be an interesting year, how bout Scot Wegman's Talon in the new Turbo mag...DAMN!!! Sick!

-Phil1320

Well according to those times i wouldn't mind making my way into spot # 4 or 5 if i can drive better this year and keep the car running strong. I'm debating on internals i would like to use when i start to rebuild my very tired 150,000 7bolt or a used 6bolt. I'm still using 2.5"exhuast, so i might try to get a3" DP and run open DownPipe this year.
BTW: Went to my local junkyard today, found about 8-10 1G's only 1 was 2.0Turbo, and not one had a manual steering rack. Is there an easy way to get a hold of one of these?
I'm Going to the track in a week. Every time that i've taken my talon to the track since i've owned it, my E.T.'s have improved since the previous times, so hopefully i can get atleast a 12.50 on sunday, but i know sooner or later i'm gunna go to the track and not come home with a new personal best. I'll keep my 14B times updated. Think if the weather is nice i'll find some more weight to pull out.
Travis aka- #8 fastest 14B car. ...Jay H went 12.52 also but my mph was 110 not 109 :D

Trav- I don't know how much of a difference going to 3" will make.....but, it might....I am all 3" now, but I went 12.02 on a 2.5" DP. Oh yeah, I will finally run off the o2 housing this time at the track, especially since I know Leon wasn't blowing through a full exhaust when he ran 11.84. Less weight, no restriction.

Between you and Jay, we would have to check the 12.52X to the one thousandth...if you guys were exact...whoever had the quicker 1/8th would be on the list first........

I think you will beat your best time no prob.....I was like you for a long time...every time I hit the strip I would better my ET, maybe 3-4 times in 7 years I was unable to do that. Went to beat the 12.02, once down there at [email protected] time I hit 113 though, and my best 60' of 1.65, so there was still some good out of it, and I hit 113.17 which became my highest MPH...stock injectors...piping and all. Leon's highest MPH on the 14b is 113.8...I'm looking to beat that record as well. 114.6 out of that FWD though...hhhhmmmm....114 would be sweet. Like I said in the last post, there was some shop that claimed 12.1@114 in a full weight car on the 14b....I find that hard to believe....maybe they failed to add they were on NOS or something? A full weight car would be about 600 lbs heavier than my car.....

If you rebuilt a motor with higher comp, no balance shafts, lighter rods, pistons, etc., you could probably run pretty hard...I mean, I'd love to, but my original engine has only 79k, so, I can't see pulling it apart, especially for the 14b......although I think the gain would be killer. So, go for it I say......

-Phil1320

>I am all 3" now, but I went 12.02 on a 2.5" DP. Oh yeah, I will finally run off the o2

Sorry, Phil, I have to correct you here… I had a full Buschur 3” exhaust (DP, test pipe and catback) when I ran 11.84 last May. I only dropped the exhaust (just the catback, DP was still there) at the very end of last year, when I ran 10.7 on SBR GT-13.

Gooberlog-Thanks Phil B.

Travis/Gooberlog,

Congrats! thats great stuff. What does your slip look like from that run. If you dont have it scanned or a photo do you mind typing it out, to include reaction time and 1/8th mile mph and ET.

I too feel I am in that realm, but there is only an eighth/mile track near me to chart my progress. Utilizing the 1/8th mile to 1/4 mile conversion formula and the standard charts floating around I should be in the 12.50-12.56 range.

Plus my girl is way heavy compared to ones like yours and phil. I will beginning to trim her fat in the next couple weeks. :D

I'd appreciate to see your slip results, thanks again

No prob, this may take a while since i'm not well equiped w/ the comp. electronics hardware. The other lane was a 16sec civic so i'll just post my info:
12:57PM 3/14/04 Temp= 50F
R/T ... .591
60' ... 1.821 "crappy compared to my 1.70"
330... 5.246
1/8... 8.052
MPH... 87.97
1000... 10.480
1/4... 12.524
MPH... 110.62
Enjoy, make sure you put your place in the 14b list above once you get some 1/4 times, dont' want to exclude you. Nice times.
Leon, Phil, you guys notice any performance gains with running open DP? I'm thinking atleast weight savings at the track.
Also, were either of you able to hold more than 18psi w/ the 14b in 3rd gear all the way to redline?
Thanks
Travis

I would think so, kinda amazing that my car is putting these numbers down with the 14b and a Orriginal Engine and Trans with 150,000miles,
and 122, 140, 140, 142 Compression. I'm thinking of a 6bolt with 2g pistons no B-shafts etc. Its all about the money man.

your mph is so high, I have had a best MPH of 86.53, but it was on an 8.1 run, maybe once i start pulling some weight from my car she will have the MPH. For that 8.0 pass she was pushing 2960 + 185 for me, 3145! But Starting this weekend she will be going on a diet! Its cool to see some similiar numbers to have some new found goals, thanks for sharing. Kepp on Rockin' that 14b!

and yea I will be hitting up a 1/4 mile drag in the next month or two.
