Well, the pics are worth a thousand words...Let me tell you how it happened.

Drove out to a nice industrial area to do some tuning.... Lately I have been launching the snot out of my car, breaking the tires loose on most of them. Anywho, first launch + I just installed the MSD DIS 2 , and I'm learning how to launch on the 2 step.

OK 4500rpms, put the E-brake down slip the clutch, lags a little through 4500-5000k then kicks in hard. I notice the front right (passenger tire) broke loose more than normal. No biggie, I figure I need to raise my drivers side rear coil over a hair to compensate a little.

Reach the end of the street...glance at the log, one click up on the translator(WOT) to calm the knock down a hair. Launch at 4500rpms on the 2 step, this time it pulls hard right off the line; hmm a little wheel hop from that right front too late shift- 1st to 2nd good -2nd to 3rd good -keep foot floored while pounding it into 4th -success.

Ok, end up at a stop light right after the second run....woops the gas station is closed....reversed the car about 10 feet, 3 feet into the reverse travel i put it into 1st gear...while the car is rolling in reverse I let the clutch out slowly just to stop the cars reverse travel (still with me?)....I hear a pop.... i figure ok....odd ...on my way to the other gas station I notice a whinning/growling sound....I smell synergyn tranny fluid!

At the gas pump I look under the car and as the car is counting down on the turbo timer I hear a rattling.... whirring sound. Under the tranny area I see red fluid....touch it..smell it...damn synergyn fluid. SH!TE

Drive to my friends house doing 20 the whole time. Get there safely (it was about 3 minutes away) look under to find the pictured mess!

Cracked case somehow. very odd. I try putting it into reverse and it grinds then eventually pops in. This tranny has been very notchy since day 1, but I expected it to get worse. So it has!

I have been driving it hard for the past couple of weeks. And it feels (or felt) great, no issues with the rear end busting yet (3 bolt) I was expecting it to go, maybe next time.

Im gonna drop the tranny in a couple of days to throw the spare one in. Maybe crack the bruised one open to dissect it a bit. Just curious to see what happened.

That's an easy one! It's even covered in the VFAQ under "shifter movement fix". It looks like the big nut that holds 5th gear onto the shaft came loose and popped the cover open. That case is also needed to get into reverse. You can fix it on the car. Just remove the end cover from your spare tranny and install it. No need to drop the trans.

Sux about those killed in the street races. I saw it on the local news, too. I hate to say this, but they weren't really smart about it. Street racing is dangerous enough under the best conditions, but these fools were racing in the day when traffic is heavier, plus it was raining. My advise: if you're going to take a risk, at least be smart about it.

I never saw that in the vfaq. Thanks. Um I already took the tranny off. As soon as it dries up a bit, Ill throw the other one on.....Kinda sucks, But at least I know the center diff is still good :)

Im gonna check this with the spare tranny. So hopefully it doesnt happen again.

When I drained the fluid on the broken tranny I noticed quite a few metal shavings. Not really sure how bad it might be in there. Hopefully not too bad.

Getting rid of metal shavings in the trans is one of the most tedious and time consuming tasks I have ever done. When my tranny blew it put metal shavings everywhere. When I drained the fliud it looked like shiny metallic paint. I guess it's a good thing you have a spare trans after all. The shavings get into every part of the tranny and they all have to be cleaned out or else they clog the small oil passages on the gearsets. Not a fun job. I hope yours isn't that bad.

If it's not too bad you mght get away with running a few quarts of cheap oil through it to rinse it out.
