Is there a how to with pictures to put high wing on a car that did not have one ?
Looked for a thread on proper way to mount high wing on a car that did not have one.
We had a low wing, purchased a high wing.
Going to trace the feet/base on both sides to make a pattern.
Going to put holes in the pattern to match the high wing mount holes.
Will position the high wing on car, use blue painters tape to mark position of wing.
Put patterns inside tape and mark holes to drill.
Drill holes.

HERE IS THE QUESTION: The holes go through two plates of metal.
Body, and inner plate for hatch. Do I drill out lower hatch metal
with a large hole, use a short bolt , and bolt wing to the one layer of body metal.
OR, do I use a longer bolt, go through both plates of metal and bolt wing that way.
Have not tried to figure out if plastic trim fits on with bolt heads in way.
Curious how factory installed high wings are done.

Im not sure as to how the high wings mount but it sounds to me like you would want to use the long bolt through both plates because it will make the wing more sturdy being through two pieces of metal as opposed to one.

The way I did mine was to drill through both metal panels (that'll give you the correct positioning), then switched the drill bit to a large one (larger than the socket that attaches the bolt) and drilled from the bottom up. Tighten up your spoiler and your done.

I used the same method that Paching used. You run the risk of the bolts backing out if you don't tighten them to one flat piece of metal. With a long bolt, as you tighten it, the inner piece will bend in and not tighten the spoiler down properly.

Good advice. I will use the single sheet metal method, and use loctite to
secure the threads.

The 1996 hatch we have does not seem to have the area marked off
inside, like people are saying exists on the 97 to 99.
Since the 96 never came with a tall wing.

We will take some pictures when we make the patterns and drill it out.
The location will be the stock style, sorta forward.

The body shop will weld the holes shut from the low wing, then it gets a full paint job.

Run a little primer and paint along the holes in the bottom frame too, even If it's with a small hobby paint brush. It'll protect it from rusting and look original..it's all in the details.
