hey, my car isn't getting spark at all. i replaced the wires, plugs, distributor cap, rotor, and still nothing. i'm wanting to replace the coil, but i'm not sure where it is. i think it must be built in to the distributor, is this correct? if so, how do i get the coil out of the distributor?

oh, by the way i did check the fuel pump, and it is working

Distributor? Did you ever get a shop manual for your car? have you looked at where your spark plug wires go to?

no i don't have a shop manual. there are only 4 spark plug wires coming out of the distributor, and of course they all go to the plugs, however the coil is built in to the distributor, so you have to change the whole thing.

Rodwa4: YOUR car does NOT have a distributor... period. Please buy a manual and look it over so you can identify the correct part names and what they do, check the trouble shooting suggestions for your condition and then we might be able to help you. It would be best that once you get up to speed you might consider starting your own thread rather than assuming that the problems are the same. It's called hyjacking another persons thread... just something to consider, not trying to put you down.

Cheers,
GTM

rowda: you are referring to a DSM car, right? I'm going to spoon feed you here and give you a hint, there is no distributor on a DSM motor, the ignition is computer controlled & what the plug wires plug into are called coil packs... there's 2 of them, one fires 1 and 4 and the other fires 2 and 3 (I *might* have that wrong, it could be 1 and 3 and 2 and 4, but I don't think so) and they are controlled by the computer... if you're only getting spark on 2 cylinders, odds are one of your coil packs has gone out... however, I still haven't figured out how you replaced the cap and rotor.

My reccomendation is get a shop manual for the car... it's one of the best invesments you'll ever make if you plan on doing the work yourself... and they're only like 15 bucks.... I think I found one on ebay for $1 on CD....

ok, i'm really confused now. what i have is two 94 eagle talon dl's. on both engines there is a sticker that says, DSM. however, both cars definantly do have distributors, and i even went to the local parts store and purchased a new rotor, for a 94 talon. so i'll check into to it. also, sorry about "taking over" the thread, i won't do so again. i apologize.

Look into it... I don't know schitt about the 420a, but I was pretty sure that the 1G 2.0 cars all used a 4g63 turbo or not.... I also don't know anything about the 1.8L motor, so if you have one of those, there's a possibility that it had a distributor, but I really don't know.

I didn't realize this was a 1.8 which I think does have a distributor. If that's the case it still may have 2 pickup coils inside. The dist. shaft could be damaged and/or the magnet may be damaged. I also think the 1.8 is a SOHC and not a DOHC.

I do think it would be best if he started a new thread and then posts here where it is so we can address the different thoughts needed to help each of them out.

Cheers,
GTM

So from this, we think that it's a 1.8L.... Rowda... fill in the details... what kinda motor you got, etc, etc...

allright, it is a 1.8L, which does have a distributor. also, i checked the timing, and it's off by a few degrees, so i'm gonna tear it apart this weekend and adjust the timing, and i'll let you know if that's the problem.

it looks like the lower pulley on the timing belt is not the right part...wtf? i don't know what it's from, but someone cut a timing mark of there own in it, and it seems to work, it's just that the timing belt slipped. i may have to replace the tensioner(sp?) but the belt is fine. i'll keep you up to date.
