I am worried. How bad is this of a problem? The block is rebuilt. The guy at the machine shop tore a whole in the wrapping to show me the pistons. Some how moisture got in there while it was stored and now there is rust in there. I am worried because I don't if this will be hard to remove and if it will have problems when I put it back together. I need advice urgently.

Well, i would put the engine on an engine stand, flip the block upside down, push that piston up out of the way, and get to work on it with a toothbrust and some brake cleaner.... make sure all that crap runs out of the block when you clean it. THEN, post some more pics of it on here so we can see it some more.
IMO, that would be worth a shot before taking it back to get it rehoned. Just make sure, that when you rotate the crank to get that piston out of the way, not to complete that pistons stroke to the top. i dont think you would want your rings to try and push that crap.
hope that'll help, maybe someone else can answer to this too.

Don't use brake cleaner on your cylinder bores. I would suggest WD40 or some other lubricant. The brake cleaner is going to remove all traces of oil and you are going to get nearly instant flash rust from the moisture in the air.

As far as your bores, you might be in trouble--tough to tell from a picture. I would go at it with some really fine scotchbrite and either WD40 or 3-1 oil. After the cleanup, if you are still in doubt, take it back to the machine shop who did your machine work and ask their opinion. :|

agreed. for some reason, WD-40 never even crossed my mind...
Let us know how it goes.

^ ^ ^ I agree- really tough to tell from a picture, but by how bright it is, I'd have a lot of hope for it being superficial enough to clean up okay. If you do have to re-hone, make it a very, very light pass. But I don't think it'll need it.

So I tried what you guys said. I put some wd-40 on it, I let it soak, then I scrubbed and here are the results.

Doesn't look good. :thumbdown

Have nothing constructive to add, but damn this man can take pictures that ilustrate his point correctly.
