hope the 1g and starion make it to the finish =)

Didn't know you were there. I was one of the drivers of the Starion:D

Unfortunately I was only able to drive on Saturday. When I left Saturday night we were in 15th place down from a high of 13th. According to team members we weren't able to run the last hour of the race. We had been hit several times in the front and it appears a relay was taken out that was vital to the engine running. The team isn't sure yet we haven't had a chance to go through the car yet.

So after being assessed a twenty lap B.S. penalty (they didn't believe we built that car for $500.00) and not running for the last hour we came in 40th out of 85 entrants.

All in all I have to say that that Starion is the easiest RWD car I have ever driven:dsm:

Write up!!! LOL

Awesome pictures. Could you go into more detail concerning the reasoning for such as high BS factor? Things are looking good for our 1G FWD LeMons project with the announcement of more event for 2008.

Hi, Kevin:

Thanks for the note. We'll do two in CA, one in MI, one in the South, one in the Southwest, and I'm hoping to do one in the mid-Atlantic. But I don't think we'll know the actual order and dates at the various tracks for a couple of months yet. A lot of tracks keep their dates from the previous year open for the same renters the following year until November or December. For newcomers, then, you're kind of stuck out of the loop until the year winds down and these tracks tell you what's open and what isn't.

If you're not on the spam list yet, you might want to sign up. As soon as we book stuff officially, that's where it'll appear first. Thanks &c--J

scroll down to the bottom, there's a good pic of the 'Highway 17' penalty. See the orange+white VW van with all the bumper stickers on the back? The penalty was given to the driver who was too aggressive, he was forced to drive behind the hippy van while it drove 10mph for two laps! It's just like driving on the real Highway 17.
There's also a few good pics of the 'Peoples Curse' getting destroyed!

Hey everyone, first post on this site. Some buddies and I built and raced a '92 TSI in the October '07 24 Hours of LeMons race.

The 24 Hours of LeMons

If you've been living under a rock and haven't heard of it yet.

Here's our car the night we bought it for a whopping $360...

Before anyone whines about ruining a good car, this car had been off the road for 5+ years already due to title issues in CA and could not be re-registered anymore. So it was either part it and send the shell to a junkyard or race it.

It is an AWD turbo with a 5 speed manual trans. The engine was in pretty good shape and the PO claimed it had a big 16G and ported O2 housing installed. Also KYB AGX struts up front.

We set about stripping it to get the cage installed:

and made quick work of it...

We were also concerned about frontal impact, especially near the stock IC mount location, so we beefed things up in that department:

Here's a shot of the car before the race started, we were going for a Tommi Mäkinen styling influence:

The race went pretty well at first, I think we got all of our drivers in the car on day 1. We ran it with everything stock underhood, including boost level (max on the gauge was around 12psi). The car still hauled balls, easily passing most of the traffic. One problem we noted was the AGXs were definitely shot. During cornering, the outside wheel would hop uncontrolled, the strut was not providing any damping whatsoever. We also had scored a nice set of FREE tires to run. They were very sticky with excellent grip but their sidewalls were made of butter and we popped each of them due to the rough surfaces we were racing over. We busted the end on one of the shift cables and were limited to only 1st and 3rd after a safety wire fix. Even with the gap over 2nd the car was quick, plenty of thrust to pull by anything on the track out of the tight turns and again on the faster straits. Unfortunately near the end of day 1 the clutch gave out.

No worries, we yanked the t-case and trans and were waiting outside the parts store on Sunday morning for them to open. As luck would have it they had the right clutch kit and we were back in business on the track only an hour or so late that morning.

We had fiddled with the shifter cables and somehow managed to find 2nd, the only problem was now we couldn't engage 1st or 3rd! On average I think the car was much faster this way, as it really only clipped our top speed at 2 points on the track, and still had good grunt elsewhere, even around the hairpins.

However near the middle of day 2 the hours of bouncing of the rev limiter in 2nd gear must have taken their toll and our timing belt bit the dust. That put an end to our race and the car has been sitting behind a team member's garage since.

We did pull the motor to start diagnosing what will be needed to revive it:

While we haven't removed the head yet, we're expecting bent or broken valves, and likely damage to the combustion chambers and/or valve seats. So we're probably better off starting with an undamaged head instead of trying to pay a machine shop to repair this one.

So this is where the car is at now:

Its really in not too bad of shape. Just needs the motor repair sorted out, a new pair of struts, and new shifter cables.

Once we do get the car running, we intend on getting in some track time and hopefully a rallyx or two. I promise to keep the pics and even videos coming! Thanks guys!
