Hey folks,

Well my mind is running a mile a minute. We were at the Redline Time Attack yesterday and it was great as usual.

We all got to talking (sponsored drivers and shop crew) and I was pretty much told I had no choice but to build a DSM time attack car. Since the decision was made for me figure.... why not... ROFL

So I was up all night thinking of all kinds of wild things to do and how to build an 2G that could be competitive in AWD Modified. The class is DOMINATED by EVOs and STis. I know because we have built or worked on many of them. :p So I need to go all out with this thing and go nuts.

I have a pretty good idea of what route to go with the engine, turbo and basic suspension but I cannot for the life of me find some fender flares that will allow me to fit the MONSTER rubber that i am always having dirty dreams about... LOL

I already know we will be making suspension parts like we have on other cars we have built, fluid coolers, etc......

Any other input, ideas, suggestions.....

I figure this was a long time coming, guess I just needed that little extra push. :rocks:

ohhh... what kind of setup do you plan on running? engine? turbo? suspension? any idea's yet?

well im not disclosing to much just yet until we make some final decisions and i decide which of the sponsors talking to me to go with. obviously once we commit and get started i'll post it all up.

we will honestly probably follow the same path we have with some of the other builds we done.... The only thing I am really up in the air about right now is 2.0 or 2.3. I am really at a fork in the road here.

Just let the tires go past the fenders. Keep the car a little higher and tada (I run 255s with H&R OE springs). Are there any limitations according to the rules as to how much tire you can run?

As for engine, I would have to say 2.3 (rules/class permitting). I got to ride along with a friend's GSX equipped with 2.3 and EvoIII 16G. It was amazing the low speed ability to 'truck' uphill with myself and another passenger in the car.

Well it will depend on the type of track. The bigger/faster tracks would favor the 2.0L as you will have a longer power band and turbo lag is usually not a huge enemy. The smaller courses will favor anything that will reduce turbo lag. I really like my 2.4 even for the bigger tracks.

funny thing is i just read over a thing Ptuning posted about taking FWD class at this event haha.

good luck martin

a 255 is the smallest i am willing to run. I'll have to bolt up some wheels to try some things out and see what's up.

Ill tell ya Martin, are you looking at 255 hoosiers or 255 street tires? 255 street tires are easy as hell to tuck decently, 255 hoosiers, I dont see how they are going to tuck well. On my 225 hoosiers, there is still a decent amount of room (mounted on those evo rims I got from you). A lot of people use 260z flares and mount em, but again its interesting to try to think how those would look. Another problem is...that rear cant be "flared" in the traditional way unless you plan on basically rewelding up that entire rear quarterpanel. As im sure you know its structural.

Martin I would tell you 2.4 if you have unlimited budget. 2.0 is fine, but you REALLY gotta make sure your coming out of the turn right which should be of importance anyway. Even with my 16g, I catch myself on the hairpins really having to do some odd attack angles to come out quick enough that im not sitting at 6000rpm in 2nd and 2500 in 2nd. Its that split second when you know your just sitting there instead of pulling.

Martin is this gonna be yours? Or the shops time attack car, who will be driving it?

PS- Martin....make duplicates of whatever custom things your making (ie ducting, transmission cooler setups, anything suspension related, hell ANYTHING) I want it!!! LOL.

my friend there is always a way. Keep in mind we have squeezed 285 on an EVO, stretched a 215 on a 10" wheel and tucked some wild stuff. Please save the applause for the end. LOL

I know i can fit what i want in there so i'm not worried about there. My main focus is going to be on the things we have seen in all of the track cars we have built. Cooling and durability on every key part is what i am after so I know most all of my head aches will be in ducting for brakes, radiator, engine compartment and cabin.

With the suspension i'm looking to help with serious camber and selecting my suspenion. I have the Mega coilovers on the car but i don't know how competitive i'll be able to be with them at this level. I have been looking at the KW V3's because i couldn't really afford to go with a custom Ohlin setup like we've done with the EVO's or JRZ's that one of our guys managed to snag. Our fabricator gets all excited about making suspension stuff so I know that we will be able to pull off some real nice stuff.

Actually IMNTBHO, a 2g is an excellent choice, once worn out/compromised suspension and LH weight bias (road courses go right) is addressed. The geometry & design is workable and there are a lot of strengths to expliot.

Go for it Martin. :thumb:

Hahah this is why I said PS, I want what "hasnt been done" before. The 2g has a good enough chassis, drivetrain and suspension, it just really hasnt been explored like some integras and the all the attention the evo gets.

i'm not saying it won't end up ok but it will be a battle. Keep in mind it's an 11 year old car and the street does hell on a chassis.

Weight and suspension will be my big battle. I am not worried about power at all. I have some serious weight loss to under go, me and the car together. LOL

The more i think about it the harder it seems. The harder it seems the more i want to push it and give it all i got.

hahaha Evan i've been dealing with this stuff for years now. It really is different when it's your own setup though. hahahaha

I didn't expect to see such a response but i've gotten some very supportive emails from other DSMtuners and some other folks that want to be a part of it. It really helps motivate me even more.

I spent today measuring up and looking over some stuff with my fabricator. Brake Duct Kit, front ducting, belly pan and trans cooler! hahahahaha

I was actually at the shop pretty late tonight getting Marty Grands T2 EVO ready for the Run Offs in KS and he and i got to talking more about the car.... he called dibs on driving it until i get it down really well and get more training. LOL needless to say he may hold back my progress. LOL

The only thing I am really up in the air about right now is 2.0 or 2.3. I am really at a fork in the road here.

If you want a 2.3, I will be either selling my 1990 GSX car outright or parting it out after Road America next weekend. It has a 6-bolt AMS-built 2.3 stroker with about 500 track miles on it, P&P Stage 4 head, cams, 20G turbo, 650 injectors, all new internal parts, ARPs, balance shafts out, etc., and dynoes at 355hp at the wheels (AMS tuned it to just 355 to stay in the NASA TTS class). I suspect it will go higher if tuned for it.

If I part it out, I will sell the complete engine (including turbo, FMIC, intercooler piping, deJon intake, etc.) for $5K.

If you want to check it out, come up to Road America Oct 12.
If anybody else wants to check out the car or the parts, come on up. It's the blue Eclipse with the For Sale sign on it.

Keep all those measurements, ya RRE has some nice things, but why dont they have brake duct kits, front ducting, belly pans, rear diffusers specifically for our cars? Hell once youve got the measurements right for your own car, it costs barely anything to produce multiple, and I know the dsm world is just starting to embrace road racing.

Well since you know those cars so well, you have notice that they have LSD's all around and a far from 50/50 power distribution. I believe a Cusco Center differential changes it from a 50/50 to a 35/65 power distribution. I don't know of any other manufacturers that make this kind of center differential so I said the Cusco as an example. Would help like crazy to tame understeer on corner exit.

VERY VERY interested on how this project Time Attack car turns out :thumb:.

While the Cusco center diff offers a 35/65 torque split, the downside is that it is not a LSD. I'd be interested to see one in action as I'm debating between the Cusco and a Quaife.

As far as balance in the corner, while we may not be able to achieve throttle oversteer, you can make a DSM AWD neutral. After my last alignment change (removing a degree of rear camber) the car tracks nicely around long sweepers and keeps it pretty tidy in the tight sections. There are also all sorts of driving techniques to help rotate the car. Chalk one up for the driver mod!
