I blew third gear in my track car Friday and will need to rebuild the transmission. I know there was a thread sometime back regarding welding the diff in a track car and some of the pro's and con's.

I'm thinking of going to a Quaife limited slip differential when doing the rebuild. The car did have the stock open diff previously. Has anyone used this in an open track car?? This will go in the Archer Talon that current has no front swaybar and a large, adjustable rear swaybar. The car is also about 200 hp at the wheels at 14 psi - fairly stock hp levels - so I don't need to put down massive power or anything. Ideas?

Are you lifting/slipping the inside wheel in high G turns? If so, I'd say get an LSDiff, I (my opinion only) would vote for a Kaaz, as a Quaife has to sense slip and then reacts accordingly, whereas a clutch type will grip and not spin if a zero torque situation arises (wheel off the ground). Apparently a Quaife acts like an open when there is no resistance.

I am not a fan of a welded diff or a spool or such as it forces 1 wheel to slip, why would one want to reduce the traction of any of the tires in a turn?

Rally and F1 teams spend a $FORTUNE$ on diff setups. If a spool worked better they'd not waste the coin.

This thread may help more than my opinion... http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=261710

Road racing- Quaife
Drag racing- KAAZ

THe KAAZ is super noisy and super aggressive. Take this from someone who owned one. It was phenominal though. Never had an issue and worker better and better as power went up.

We ran a KAAZ in the Shepherd tranny with out a single problem...

Be very careful about generalizing from autocrossing to road-racing. In the former, you really want to avoid modified clutch-packs because you are in low gears (with tons of available torque at the wheels) and steering very sharply. That's why autocrossers like Quaifes. But in road-racing, you are in higher gears and not steering as sharply, so the pro-active behavior of a clutch-pack often makes it preferable to a Torsen.

In short: +1 to what Greg wrote.

Thanks for the insight.

As was mentioned in the last post - this is a road race car. Mostly third and fourth gear; I can think of only one corner on all the tracks I've run that I use second gear. To be honest, I've never studied the physical differences in how the Quaife and Kaaz work (I've never had to!) I'm relying on the group and my shop to help me decide which to choose.

+1 to Jtoby and Greg

I currently have a quaife as my car is a DD and I started out in Solo2 but have recently started to move to road racing. Will see how things progress . . .

Just a quick note: The decision to use the KAAS was a collaborative effort discussed between John Shepherd and Mike Welch of RRE... I figured their input was top notch :thumb:
