120MPH Downshift Explosion!!!

This is what happens to your clutch when you down-shift at 120 MPH from 5th gear to 3th gear. :nono: Not a really good idea? :barf:

I think the tranny is ok :thumb:

Still looks like new. How much for that clutch disc? LOL Really though that's pretty crazy just slightly destroyed.

The disc is about $50.00 both the disc and the clutch are only 8 races old...
 
I don't know if you have one allready but I think it's improtant to raise the topic of scatter Shields.

Although meant to contain flywheel explosions there is always a chance that a part of that clutch could have made its way though the tranny and potentially into the passenger compartment.

Scatter shield is real important with a transverse engine especially if you're pushing some big HP :thumb:
 
That'll go back together, little-bit-a JB Weld, some duct tape, and a Zip-tie or two and you're all set.

My previous clutch failure is mild in comparison.

I bought my car from a good friend of mine. Right before he sold it to me he destroyed the clutch in the car when it was stock. He never told me the real story of how it happened due to him being embarrassed I'm sure but there was a huge hole in the bellhousing and it shot through the fan and into the radiator. Luckily it didn't do anymore damage though.
 
Can you please explain why you would want to downshift at 120mph from 5th to 3rd?

In a nut shell............. I'm a dumb-ass! I don't know what I was thinking, maybe I thought I was going slower in the excitement of catching up to the car in front of me. Weak excuse, and a costly mistake!

yeah and i thought it was bad when my dad drove my car for the first time we were going along tacked up to like 6500 rpms and he downshifts and floors it! i thought my car was done right there...... then it doesnt help he tells me how he had blown two engines before overreving once in his harley and once in his corvette two very costly expences.....

There was so much debris wrapped around the clutch and flywheel that the engine made a low hum and shuttered when I revved it. I'm assuming with all the crap around it, made the flywheel unbalanced as the cause. Compression check showed 150 straight across so I'm hoping all is well... can't start the engine without the tranny on to check it at this point.
 
I dun understand why people are calling this guy an idiot. Lol he was in an actual race, not on a drag strip. We all make split decision mistake, mebbe some cost more then others. Lets see some of ya all play with the big boys and not get hurt :) **** happens all the time on the track.
 
ive down shifted to a lower gear on many occasions even messing messed my clutch up but never NEVER has it ever laid it self out on all neatly on a piece of paper.. man.. you killed that thing... but yahh that sucks.... not a good feeling.
