I bought a 92 tsi awd a couple months ago and wasn't able to drive it because it supposedly had a bad clutch. Well i changed the clutch and all the problems associated with it and now i have a big problem. When i first started the car and drove it, it drove fine, as soon as it went to operating temperature everything went down hill. The car started sputtering and acting like a machine gun. I changed the spark plugs to ngk and the wires to magnecores because the stock setup was pretty beaten up. Now when i start the car the spark plugs get instantly fouled, which means the ecu is dumping out way too much fuel. Even if i put new plugs in, they get fouled instantly. The car has a 255 walbro in it and i have a 3 in downpipe with nothing after that. I was thinking it could be numerous sensors or even the coil pack but i am not sure. I don't want to go spending uneccessary money if you know what i mean. If someone can help me out, I will greatly appreciate it.

i do believe you can run a 255 without a fpr if that is what your saying. I don't see how the ecu would just dump fuel on start up.

When you say 3" DP and nothing after that do you mean that the DP is the only thing there for exhaust? If this is the case thiis might be the problem. A lot of people don't realize that an exhasut leak close to the O2 sensor will act just like an air leak. Since the exhaust comes out in pulses it does create some vacuum which if all you have is a DP you could be vacuuming in a lot of air and the sensor reads a lean condition and adds fuel. I thknk you need to give some extra details to be able to help you on this one.

Some kind of fuel regulation could help. My friend had the same problem on a stock dsm. He put 255's in without fuel regulation and the car ran like crap. He put on a maft and a mafs and he doesn't have anymore problems.

I see what you're saying about the open downpipe but would the ecu richen up on start up. I mean you can smell the gas right at start up and the plugs get carbonized instantly. I was thinking it might be the ecu, although not having an afpr did come to mind. If anyone has any other suggestions i'm open for it.

If anyone has any input on this manner i would appreciate it greatly. No one else knows our cars like we do so i will definitely consider any suggestions.

If you don't have an exhaust you will always smell fuel ragardless. I had a leak on the DP to O2 housing gasket and this is how I figured out I had a leak since the smell of fuel was killing me. This small leak caused the car to run extra rich.

At startup the ECU uses an open loop map, not as aggressive as when you go WOT but it keeps the car idling. After warm-up the car starts using the O2 sensor as the fuel controlling feature.

Two things. Either your FP is super high. Is there anyway you can check your fuel pressure? Other option I can think of is that your injectors are staying open longer than needed. This could be anyting from an electrical issue to a mechanical issue with the injectors. If you can try swapping injectors with some one else and see what happens.

Get the manual and go through all the checks. It is fairly simple to check the coils, O2 snesor, water temp sensor, etc from an electrical standpoint. One other thing if your O2 is shot this would definetely cause major fuel problems like you are experiencing. I believe if the O2 sensor goes out the car runs an open loop map in the ECU.
